    open cows

I have heard lots of reports of an unsually high amount of cows being open around here. People that normally have 92-94% bred are running 70%. Its bad enough the cattle prices are low now folks are having high numbers of open cows.

If an registered black angus bull is sold to you by a reputable breeder should he take the bull back and refund your money if the calves have horns? What is an equitable solution?

How often are you feeding supplement tubs

If you want to give a little something and keep them gentle give them some protein cubes or even a little soy hull pellets. once a week or so.

    calf with twisted leg (pic)

I would have to agree with others about breaking it. A straight leg want make him taste any better and would substantially increase the risk of death ---before steaks.

??? for those of you who might know

If it was me I would cull that bull or atleast add another bull with him. Just wouldnt want to take any chances. Theres enough stuff that can go wrong that you will never know about no need it taking a chance on something extra.

    Protein tub feeding

The fertilizer cost so much that it is way cheaper to buy tubs and feed low quality hay. Also if you fertilize and dont get any rain you have to absorb the cost of fertilizer plus you have to go by hay. My tub dealer claims they will eat more if I stop and start but I am not sure. I have a small...

    Protein tub feeding

I normally put out another tub when or before the cattle consume the old one. I was thinking if I waited 2 or 3 weeks before replacing the empty ones I could possibly cut my protein bill by a quarter. Any thoughts on going that long ? I know some of you are not feeding any protein and I was...

Who is testing the content of protein tubs and cubes and how often are these test preformed?

    Pregnancy rate

Mine has been running about 93%. But the thing that I noticed is that at 90% bred rate and 10% cull it looks like over 10 years the whole herd would have been culled. Is this correct?

    Pregnancy rate

Anybody know what the average herd pregnancy rate per year is?

Just curious did you cut the top, bottom or side? Good job. As I read I just knew it was going to have a bad ending -- glad it didnt.

    Vaccine ?

No I am just trying to better understand why calves that have been co-mingled at the stockyard seem to get sick more often.

    Stockyard calves

Around here most people say that stockyard bought calves are much more likely to get sick when you get them home than calves bought straight off someone's farm and moved to your farm. Is this true? In the stockyard how is the diesease most likely transmitted? Is it from shared water, nose to...

    Vaccine ?

Can a calf vaccinated with a modified live vaccine make another calf that is not vaccanted sick?

    horns vs. no horns?

I have some cows with horns but I prefer them not to have horns. Horns cause problems growing into there eyes or there head and I have to cut them off. Horns are just one more thing to cause a problem and cost me extra time or money. Now if I see a real good looking cow with horns at a sale...

    My bull has ticks?

I have had ticks get into the calves ears and give them some pretty bad infections. Buyers love to see a swollen ear. Gives them something else to discount. I have found keeping the grass cut short helps as much as anything. The ol timers swear by the sulfur blocks. I put a few out if I see to...
