Around here most people say that stockyard bought calves are much more likely to get sick when you get them home than calves bought straight off someone's farm and moved to your farm. Is this true?
In the stockyard how is the diesease most likely transmitted? Is it from shared water, nose to nose contact , manure etc?

Any of the above. However if the calves have been through the yards oncw]e they probably have less chancr of getting sick than others. Also add stress from sorting hauling dehydration and comingling to the mix

Stockyard cattle are definately more of a challege for all the reasons that mtncows listed . I have seen country cattle that were a train wreck too though .

I would GUESS that the real answer is a combination of things:
1) Stress realted to being hauled and co-mingled
2) Nose to nose contact with animals that were brought in because they were sick and the owner didn't want to treat or didn't know how to treat.
3) Previously contaminated facilties - although, most facilities are spraying between sale dates to help reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Just my 2 cents.
