    barrels for mineral feeders--Dun

As others have stated, the hole needs to be taller. Also in general practice it is alway good to cut a radius at the corners instead of a square corner which is a stress riser that can lead to a crack beginning. If the hole is already cut with square corners; you can take a round file or a...

    Bull acting strange - thoughts

Pretty sure he's taken a whuppin. He's probably challenging other things in the pasture to lift his deflated ego, which Bulls have in abundance.

    broken leg?

Milkmaid, I had a 400lb bull get a leg broken above the knee (is that the stifle?). Talked with my vet. He said in vet school they jokingly said, "if you put a bovine and a broken bone in the same room, 'it will heal". My bull looked really bad walking but he never quit trying. He kept...

    teeth

I always heard they are replaced at about 2yrs. I was at an auction once when the prettiest smooth mouth cow you've ever seen brought very little. The barn owner was alert and stopped the sale and then sold her as a two yr. old who'd dropped her temp teeth.

cow with mass on neck and a couple of pics

Moloss, do you feed hay in hayrings. Many did not agree with me when I posted previously that I thought that it's caused by bruising and irritation while making contact with the hayring while eating. I had one last year; the vet gave me the above as a possible reason if the cow is otherwise...

    Scour question....

I agree that it's most likely milk scours. Watch the calf to make sure that he continues to feel good. If he makes a turn for the worse contact a vet. There are others on this board that know a lot about baby calves. Maybe they will chime in.

    Lifting a Down cow

Animallover, I just can't get my brain wrapped around the fact that no one with a tractor will help you. That's really sad. You need to start right now working on a better relationship with your neighbors. With regard to putting down a sick cow: I've shot a few but one old cow I had my vet...

    Cow eating dirt..

As stated by Rockridge, change from trace mineral block to bagged minerals that are recommended for your area. Keep them available all the time. Also keep salt out. Licking either minerals or salt seldom gives cows as much as they need.

    limping calf help

    That's what I'm thinking.

    Any Ideas??

Randi, I think it's almost certain to be caused by eating from a hayring. I had one last yr that was like that except more in the brisket. The vet said that it was not uncommon to have that fluid build-up from eating at a hayring. He said, and understandably so, that it's slow to spread out...

    Milking out a cow

Randi, "we" is just me in my little operation and I've had a lot of birthdays. I don't mess with those feet unless absolutely necessary. :)

    Milking out a cow

Nova, the flank rope really works. That's what I do when a cow needs milked or when training a calf to nurse, if necessary.

    calf pulling charges?

I have an excellent vet. Most vets in our area now don't work on cows. They've found a better and easier source of income. I show my appreciation to my vet every chance I get. This includes paying more than he charges some times. He wouldn't take it but I write the check for more and hand...

What about this for first aid kit

Don't forget a nerve tablet. Better keep a whole bottle of them. The cows will need one too!

    Cow losing weight

Lee, I had a cow that was losing weight. It was time to wean her calf and I thought she would begin gaining after that. She continued to gradually go down hill. During our recent cold weather she started standing with her head down and quit eating. She had a froth coming from her mouth and...

    Lil' Bella's gone

lovethespots, you seem to be a caring person. Those kinds of people make the best cow people. It's true that you must face reality when one gets sick or dies. You have to know when it's best to "fold em" for the animal's and your benefit. However when I quit caring I'll get out of the...

    first herd

Papa, dun is correct in saying with good hay and grass as long as possible, you shouldn't be feeding out of a bag. It is a good practice to feed a little good tasting stuff occasionally to keep the herd coming to you when you need to get them up. When I say a little, I mean maybe half a 5 gal...

    first herd

Papa, there are not many fans of mineral blocks on this board. I'd get them on loose minerals soon. Check with a local farmer's supply store if you can't get an audience with the county agent; they can tell you what kind of minerals are needed in the area.

    weevils

Exactly TB; you don't get charged extra if you get a grasshopper in your turnip greens in a restaurant. Same principle here.

Trader Cow Calf Pair Ran Down

I think she just needs a successful worming and lots of groceries(grass). Her rear end looks clean. I think most johnes victims have chronic diarrhea and the messy rear end that goes with it.
