    Implants

I use Ralgro most of the time. I have read several studies on Ralgro and Synovex C comparisons and the difference is minimal. One study the calves on Ralgro may gain slightly better, the next the calves on Synovex C may gain slightly better. Both groups always gain better than non implanted calves.

    How do you treat mastitis?

I agree. I have had cows before with a couple bottle teats that took a calf a month or so to start sucking them. I used to worry about it but never had a problem. I culled the cow after the first time though.

    Over-Conditioned Cattle

I agree with M-5. If you are calving in the Spring and have the grass you have, you should not have to supplement anything except mineral. In the winter, it just depends on your hay. Nothing wrong with good grass.

    Feeding heifers

They are 9 months and I was just wanting to move them up with my March/April calving cows if possible. I know with the Brahman they may not make it but I thought I might try to have them ready by 13 to 14 months old. If not, I will hold them to fall calve.

    Feeding heifers

I have 4 Brangus heifers that weigh between 620 and 680lbs I would like to breed in June. What rate of gain could I expect with this feed at 1% of their weight and free choice 11% CP coastal hay? http://www.lonestarfeed.com/pdffiles/0776.pdf I don't want to push them too hard but would like...

Leaving the cows to watch the farm.

You will get a lot of there is no way I would do that but if your fences are in good shape I wouldn't worry about doing any more than you suggested in the spring/summer. I work away from home for up to a month at a time and my cows don't see anyone but my wife once in a while when we are not...

    Purina Wind & Rain

I switch to the Wind and Rain High Mag 7 Complete with Availa 4 about mid Feb. and use until summer grasses come on if I have cows on rye grass. If not I stay with the all season.

    Purina Wind & Rain

Exactly. I'm not here to advertise for Purina because I know there are better or just as good products, but I like that it stays in the mineral feeder and my cows intake is adequate. I have had trouble getting them to eat other products.

    Rabies

Why can I buy every vaccine I need to give my animals except rabies? Just wondered why I have to carry my dogs to the vet once a year for a rabies vaccine when I am able to purchase their distemper, hepatitis and parvo? I'm not complaining just wondered if there was a reason.

    Hay Planning

I keep hay in front of mine Nov. thru Feb. to mid March depending on the year. At 600lbs. they would probably start out at 1 roll a week but if you feed protein, they will eat more. As they grow they will eat more also and during real cold spells they can almost double their hay intake. I don't...

    healed castration pictures please

lol....that would mean that every male calf is palpated as they come in. That doesnt happen. The announcer says 'cut' instead of 'steer'...just an individual way to make his auctioneering different..Maybe the way this 'one' auctioneer says cut because he feels steer sounds like something else...

    healed castration pictures please

A banded calf won't get docked over a cut one in east texas. Now days they will just be glad he got castrated before he made it to 500lbs. I go to quite a few sales and it amazes me how many I see still bulls.

    wormer?

Using pour on wormers will only get you closer to resistance faster. At least that's what my vet says. Everything I read nowadays says rotating will to. Pick one and use it until it's no longer effective and then switch. Use fly spray or fly pour on for flies.

    wormer?

Inject your wormer. I use cydectin right now.

    Drugs on board..

I don't keep anything on hand. No reason to. I don't look at my cows every day either. No reason to.

    Hoof trimming

Either a vet or a hoof trimmer. If you have any dairies in your area they may be able to let you know of a trimmer if your vet doesn't do it.

I think this is Founder with pics please help?

How old is the cow? You said she is a good cow so I wouldn't cull her on that hoof alone. I wouldn't keep a heifer out of her more than likely but as long as she produces without any other problems I would have her trimmed. It cost money to replace a breeding age cow. If she is favoring it I...

    I have a weaning question???

What do their mamas bags look like? Are they still producing enough milk? Pictures of the cows would help but it's normal for most cows to loose weight nursing a calf. If it's a lot of weight when calves are only 4 to 5 months old it's not good. The heifers would be fine and grow on feed and...

    Feeding Mineral

Read the analysis of your mineral before you feed salt with it. The mineral I use is 23% salt and is all you need. Some mineral mixes may not have enough salt. The one I use now is purina wind and rain all season 7 av-4 and it's 15% calcium, 7% phosphorous, 23% salt. I figure they may not get...
