How to lose money cutting calves

Was this on Saturday? There's nothing like an ER visit on Saturday night! I bet that hand's sore today. You're a lucky man you didn't do more damage than you did.

    Friday evening

I'm sitting on the front porch watching the cows and calves graze by while enjoying an adult beverage and counting my blessings. What a great way to spend a Friday evening.

How far does everyone else let there boots go?

just about as far as you do. The soles on my old Ariat work boots were coming loose earlier this summer; I used gorilla glue on them and they're good as new now. ;-)

Your Church Might be a Redneck Church if.....

"WHEN..... in a congregation of 500 members, there are only seven last names in the church directory." Wow that's a big congregation in our neck of the woods! We don't have half that many on Christmas or Easter.

    North Texas and Oklahoma

We just had rain starting around 4:30 this morning with less wind than we had yesterday.... when it was blowing at 35-40 mph.

    I have a weird question.....

The fat around the beef slows the aging process based on how much fat there is, one without much fat ages quickly. Too long aging on low fat beef will dry the meat out, and cause it to lose flavor. Makes total sense. I had never had it mentioned to me in all the years we've been having calves...

    I have a weird question.....

Interesting. Can you explain the science behind it? Inquiring minds what to know.

    I have a weird question.....

I was talking to a friend who lives in another part of the state . He dropped a calf off at the processor ( first one he's every taken for processing) last week. He was told by the processor that the time required was proportional to how fat the calf was. I've never heard that from a...

    2018 Writeoff Toys

Buying 150 acres across the road pretty well shut down the toy buying this year. :D Merry Christmas!

    Long lines

We took a trailer load of calves to the sale barn in Decatur after church today. I think everyone else had the same idea- we waited in line for 40 minutes to even get on the property. It was another 25 minutes to unload. Haven't seen lines like that since 2011!

    stir crazy

We finally dried out enough to get some chores done. I took a vacation day yesterday and we worked from can see to can't see. Worked some calves, moved keeper heifers across the road, hauled hay, repaired fence, move cows to different pastures, planted some ryegrass. I'm so thankful we got all...

    First step in weaning...

was accomplished last night. We brought the pairs back to the home place yesterday evening. Hopefully by this weekend, we'll be able to separate them. Then, let the bawling, wailing and gnashing of teeth begin.

    Unlike Sky...

We had almost 3.5 inches over the last week.No real runoff into the tanks but then again we didn't really need it there. The grass has really started growing again. Thank the good Lord!

    Nice morning temp

It felt like fall this morning when I let the dogs out - 64 with low humidity. Very nice after the crazy hot weather lately. Now if we can just get some rain.

    What a blessed Sunday!

We had an awesomely blessed Sunday afternoon. We had two different storms blow through, each dropping over an inch of rain. What a way to start July off. We've been so dry - 3.7 inches of rain in May and only .5 inch in June. Talk about answered prayers! Thank you, Lord!

    Saved our be-hinds

Thankfully it only lasted a couple of days. We lost power for a day; a friend closer to town lost power for 3 days off and on. When things finally thawed out, I couldn't get to work due to trees down on the county road. Sure wish we had some of that moisture about now. :P

    Saved our be-hinds

We had a couple of sprinkles the last couple of days. Please send some our way; we're dry - only 3.7 inches in May and .5 inches in June. Still have grass since we're perpetually understocked and cows and calves look good.

    Government subsidies.

No, sir, it was not clear cut. If I remember correctly this was a "brush control" initiative; we signed up to clear 100 acres of cedars, green briars etc. on an approximately 190 acre tract of land. NRCS did not care how/where the 100 acres was laid out. We left a lot of trees, mainly oaks...

    Government subsidies.

We did something like that a few years back. However, at that time, there were no annual inspections, just two - one to make sure you actually cleared the cedars and another to make sure you seeded the areas you had cleared. I, too , would not like to be tied up in an agreement with annual...
