Gonna get some Ice, need advice

Thanks Cfpinz, that was my thinking but wasn't sure that would work. Unfortunately in my situation that lot is the best place for them even with concrete. I'm with you, I will take snow over ice and unfortunatley that too is gonna happen. Over a foot of snow is forcast to come after the...

Gonna get some Ice, need advice

Thanks Alice and no that doesn't sound strange at all. I have seen it used before. I guess I should have also said that besides worrying about traction I am also concerned with them eating whatever I put down. Poor things are bored right now and eat the straw when I put it down. I know...

Gonna get some Ice, need advice

Thanks for the suggestion Rattler, I hadn't thought of that. I was only thinking that I couldn't use Ice Melt cause they would eat it. I'm going tomorrow to lay in supplies so will pick up a couple tubes. If they do decide to taste the sand is it gonna hurt them as long as they don't try to...

Gonna get some Ice, need advice

I have a steer and a heifer in a cemented dry lot. In my infinate wisdom I figured with the recent thaw it would be a good idea to get the pen cleaned out and them out of the slop. Well now we are supposed to get a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice starting tomorrow night. Then Sat. afternoon supposed...

    wife swap

I went and read the promo. Oh my goodness, your right people won't think that is typical of Iowans, but they are going to think we switched from raising corn to nuts! :o I just feel bad for the kids missing out on an education, be it a proper homeschooling situation or public. Crowder- I...

    wife swap

I suppose to make the show more exciting they picked this family, but I really wish they would have chosen a better example of normal Iowa people. I guarantee we aren't all they way this family has been described. My SIL grew up in a barn, but she doesn't come from a normal family either...

    wife swap

I didn't get to see the show. From what you describe Crowder, that family can't be originally from Iowa, must be a transplant from California or maybe Tennessee?

ethics, auctions, and bidding people up.

What's a 14 year old boy doing at an auction by himself? Where are your parents? Do you call them from your cellphone to bring the trailer if you buy something? Not being mean here just curious. I wouldn't let a 14 year old make decisions on stock purchase by themselves personally.

how cold is it in your neck of the woods

Right now it is -9 and windchill is -21. All area schools have delayed start of school tomorrow by 2 hours. Guess they are worried about that #2 diesel gelling up in the morning as our low is supposed to be -15 to -20 with windchills from -30 to -40. This will be our coldest night so far this...

    Something Discouraging...

I'm 36 and grew up a city kid, but I was always out at friend's farms playing with the animals. We started renting an acreage/farm six years ago. We now raise a few head of beef, pigs and our landlord brought over a few ewes this year as lawnmowers. Looks like we may finally get to purchase...

    Iowa Farm Fatality Report

The sad part is that we just had 2 more guys killed within the last 6 days from bull attacks in NE Iowa. What amazes me is that they weren't "young and dumb" they were both over 60 I think and should have known better. We fed out a CharxAngus bull for our freezer last year and I always had a...

best type of stock dog for small operation?

Rottweiller. Good all around herding/watch dog. We found out ours has a natural instinct about herding, she is awesome to watch. Great with the kids and loves people and attention.
