Hay Feeder Wagons: Pros and Cons

We have an H and S feeder wagon that we feed silage in. We have had it for probably 15 years. The first 5 years it was used every day in a backgrounding lot.We now just use it to feed our cows in the winter. It has been a very good well made feeder we have never done any work to it other than a...

    Belt feeder vs. Board/chain feeder

If you are even thinking about converting to a tractor/mixer setup I would recommend not buying any feeder and putting that money towards the conversion. Dad and I went through the same thing, we always talked about changing over to a mixer wagon but kept putting it off. We finally did and are...

    In-ground silo photos; suggestions needed!

if you could line the sides with the same plastic used to cover the top it probably wouldn't be necessary to concrete the sides.

    Belt feeder vs. Board/chain feeder

We had a 100' demuth feeder it was a nice unit. We never had any problems with it. We used it for about 5 years until we converted to feeding with a mixer wagon. If you can find a used harvestore model 500 they are better than the demuths.

    feeder cattle contracts

Has anyone on here ever contracted feeder cattle directly with a feedlot? I would like to expand our stocker/backgrounding operation but would like to find some ways to have some risk protection.

Any fruits or veggies I shouldn't feed my cows?

My brother sells chemicals to some large vegetable possessors in central california. He said all their waste goes to cattle. He saw cattle being fed a loader bucket full of pepper waste into a hay ring so I would say peppers even in large amounts would be safe. I visited him this winter and...

    dairy replacements

I was referring to raising replacements for someone else on a custom basis. They would provide the heifers from their own herd to me and I would raise them to breeding age for a set fee.

    Grain sorgum

we baled some after the grain was harvested and sold it to a neighbor when hay was short. the protein was low, but it might be okay for a dry cow. The bales were a little damp and went through a fermentation. He said the cows loved it and turned down good fescue hay for the milo bales. You might...

    Best fencing for feedlots?

We use brand new railroad ties and oak 2x8's. I have a friend who owns a sawmill so we can get boards sawed at an affordable price. The railroad ties come from a place that makes them about 20 miles from here.

    custom wintering cows

the protein is 8.8% dry matter basis. I don't think protein will need to be added. Maybe a wee bit during the last trimester. The feed is $20 per ton, it is usually around 35% moisture. I think the cows intake will be around 50 pounds per head per day. I would charge actual feed cost plus...

    custom wintering cows

we get a by-product from a seed corn processing plant. It is similar to silage.

    custom wintering cows

Does anyone have any information or opinions on custom wintering cows? We have an abundant supply of forage available. My idea was to take delivery of cows around Nov.15 and keep them until march 15. the owner would then take them home and start calving around April 1st. The cows would be kept...

    Moorman's Mintrate Blocks and mineral

We use moorman's "southeast special" mineral. It seems to be a good product, but I honestly haven't shopped around or tried other brands. I think it's around $18 a bag. We also use a few of their protein tubs. The tubs we use are red in color. They cost around $100 each. We try to limit using...

Any one grained out calves on straight Corn Gulten?

I would worry about them getting polio if you intend to feed much more than 4 pounds per head per day. If one dies it erases any saving the gluten might provide.

    liquid fat in rations

Does anyone feed fat in a finishing ration? How many pounds per head per day can it be fed? It weighs 7.44 pounds per gallon. I can get this feed less than 10 miles from home but must get at least 6000 gallons. The company will provide a tank "free" of charge. I've included an analysis from the...

    Flexible Feed Bunk

How close are you to washington IN? Jones and Sons makes a pre-cast concrete bunk that is awesome. I think they are around $100 for an 8 footer. You will only buy them once. They're bull proof.

    feed test results

I just got back the results from a feed test. I don't completely understand what all the numbers mean. This test is from a complete mixed ration for fatting steers 800-1200 pounds. numbers are on dry matter basis. protein 11.19% fat 3.39% adf 13.46% adicp .54% aNdf 27.86% lignin 1.04% ash 2.36...
