    When???

I had a cow rebreed 3 weeks after calving before. It depends how easy the calving was and how good of condition the cow is in.

    Heifer adopts wrong calf

I had two cows swap calves last year. I saw the first calf born, tagged him and then a week later I was gone on a trip the second cow calved and by the time I returned home they swapped calves. The cow that calved first would search out her natural calf and stand behind him and lick him the...

    Leasing bulls

We lease out a few young bulls and a couple of older herd bulls each year. We charge by the number of cows exposed to, usually $15-20 per cow. We get the benefit of seeing how the young bulls preform and we buy some of the heifers back from our customers. So far all verbal agreements, the...

    A.I.

That bull shouldn't be looking over the fence if he still has work to do at home. The first calf heifers are the hardest to rebreed in a timely manner, especially if they are raising a big calf. 70 days is plenty of time, look into the CIDR protocol, it will jump start any that are not cyclying.

First calf of the new year...No pics yet

Nice calf, good mom doing her job. How many bulls in a row have you had?

    2009 all heifers

We started 2008 with 9 out of 10 heifers, I made the comment I hoped I got some bulls and the next 14 of 15 were bulls. Finished out 2008 with 70% bulls.

    Early Calves

Kenny I have had them be early one time, late the next, depends on the mating and the envirnomental conditions during gestation. I do however have one cow that has been 10-12 days late on 5 or 6 pregancies and her daughters seem to be the same way.

    Early Calves

I had a calf come 21 days early, the cow was bred AI so I know it was early. The calf weighed 51 pounds and it was a very hot August day. Good thing I was home, got it in the barn out of the heat and the calf did fine. The next 2 years the cow calved at normal gestation length.

    twins

We had 2 sets in one year. We bred 8 cows AI and 6 stuck, with 2 sets of twins (all bulls) we had 8 AI calves. 100% rate right.

    earliest CIDR use

my vet always says the second heat after the CIDR is strongest, so if your AI does not take the bull usually settles them next cycle

    Lutalyse or Not?

In my experience the reason the heifers are in the bull pen is that they are cycling. I would give the lut in 10-14 days to be safe and keep them in synch with your cow herd.

    three bull questions

    1. Older bulls are harder to sell as breeding animals, most people want a fresh looking 2 year old. The bull is likely worth pound price. 2. We save our best bull calves at weaning and then cull down again at 14-15 months and some of the best at weaning do not make the grade, 8 month old...

    breeding hiefers early

We wanted to shift more cattle to fall calving, so we bred our January heifers to calve in September/October the following year at 20-21 months. We had no problems and did not have to pull any calves. We also were able to get most bred back for second calves within 90 days. We used a proven...

    Premature calf

We had 1 a month early last year, weighed 51 pounds. He was 50# light at weaning but caught the rest of the calves by yearling weight. We kept him for a sale bull and he was one of the first ones to sell.

    Breeding

EZ Breed CIDR works the best it involves a couple trips through the chute. Lutalyse works good, you may not get all with one shot, two shots ten days apart is better. And if you do not want to handle the cattle feed MGA. If any of these sound good let me know and I can be more specific.

    # of AI bulls use in a herd

I try to stick to 1 AI sire for about each 10 cows. This give you a contempary group of calves from one proven sire and makes it easier to measure how each cow preformed.

If you had a cow in standing heat would you AI that PM.

We use CIDR and heat detect then breed all cows/heifers not in standing heat at 72 hours post Lutalyse shot. The cattle not in heat get a GnRH shot and we have just as good a conception rate on them as the ones observed in standing heat. So I say any doubts regarding breeding too early give...
