will a yearling bull successfully breed mature cows?

Maturity as in they have an ability to impregnate calves? Some bull calves can breed a cow (i.e, they have live semen) at 6 months, but most certainly nearly all bull calves are capable of impregnating a female by 9 months. A 600 lb. bull calves would have to get lucky on the side of a hill or...

    Obsessive/Compulsive Sucking Disorder in Calf

Maybe I am missing something here, but at 400 lbs. why does one care that he won't eat the grain? In CO mountains, I calve in April. I wean my calves in August. Pasture is going and it is getting cold at night. I want them gone before winter (which here is mid-October) Folks buy my calves all...

will a yearling bull successfully breed mature cows?

Thanks, I kinda figured that we would be OK. He is an average size yearling bull. He wasn't fed up just grazed on pasture so he is not huge but he is not small. He probably weighs 1100 right now. My bigger cows are 1500 and there is an obvious height difference but not a major discrepancy...

will a yearling bull successfully breed mature cows?

I put a yearling simmental bull out with my cows and heifers this year. He was born April 2013. I didn't even think twice about it, but my neighbor asked if I was using him and said he'd never get my bigger cows bred. I kinda figured nature has its ways and was not too worried. While doing...

    New calf

I agree that the bull was not a black angus. Had to be something with some white on it. For 3 years I mated by black gelbvieh bull to my black angus and black baldy cows. This year, I got 3 red calves. Absolutely zero chance of having a visitor, we are an isolated herd of cattle. The...

    Stolen Heifers

Post and repost this all over your local craigslist and any facebook pages you may have that relate to livestock. It is amazing the power of social media and people who will take a personal interest to look out for these animals for you. Include a picture of your brand so folks know what to...

    Question on pine needle abortion

I'd say with almost absolute certainty with the retained placenta that the abortion was caused by the pine needles. I usually fish the placentas out and give antibiotics, it is really not a hard process (if you have a chute that is!)

    Question on pine needle abortion

I am fairly certain that the dry needles contain the same acid as the green needles on the tree. I have a healthy supply of ponderosa pines and my cows like to strip them of their needles. This has resulted in me having to pen my cows up the last 3 months of gestation. I have had a few pine...

beef cow with mastitis....what can i do for her today?

The quarter isn't red but it is larger and dripping milk. The calf doesn't seem interested in sucking it too long despite the fact it is full....maybe 2 sucks then he moves on. I gave her the injectables tonight and will get the infusions for her udder tomorrow I suppose.

beef cow with mastitis....what can i do for her today?

I have a beef cow that seems to have mastitis. She calved on Thursday. She has general malaise and walks like her udder might hurt and kicks at it every once in awhile. She allows the calf to nurse all 4 quarters but one quarter looks larger and harder than the others and she just lays down...

    Pussy discharge in young heifer?

Thank you. I guess I was under the impression discharge from cycling would just be clear or possibly blood tinged. I cannot understand why the title was changed to "be nice", I guess correctly returning to an anatomical part of an animal is unacceptable?

    Pussy discharge in young heifer?

That is a good question, but I lopped their balls of myself in September and I am pretty sure I didn't miss any.

    Pussy discharge in young heifer?

I have a December 2012 heifer that seems to have some pussy discharge from her vulva. It is not entirely opaque but looks like snot with yellowish tinge. She has not been exposed to a bull. She is pastured with 3 steer calves who are 8 months old and 3 other heifers. I realize the steers...

    Unattended Calf

I have had heifers leave their calf before. In my mind, with the predators in my area, it is not OK for momma to go out and leave the calf overnight to where she can't even hear what is going on. I had a heifer leave a calf right up here by my house while she went way out in the back 40 (or...

small corriente cow to angus bull problems with BW?

Cross_7 I train up some horses and mainly I will use this cow and her calves to track around the arena and throw a rope at from time to time. I acquired her with her calf and bred back for a pittance and I bet I can sell her future offspring to my friends for the same use. It doesn't sound...

small corriente cow to angus bull problems with BW?

I took this cow and weighed her this morning and she has more frame than I thought-500 lbs. I am confident she will flesh out a bit too so after what I have heard here I am confident breeding her to a beef bull. Also glacier ridge I keep a few dairy cows (jerseys) that can't weigh more than...

small corriente cow to angus bull problems with BW?

Ha, love the picture. With horses, the size of the sire is no issue in breeding. Of course, there is the actual size difference when mating that can become an issue in extreme situations. Small mares (think Shetland ponies) can be AI'ed to draft type stallions and the mare limits fetal size...

small corriente cow to angus bull problems with BW?

I acquired a corriente cow and her calf. The cow bred back and appears to be about 4 months along by palpation. The calf was born last April and is 275 lbs. The cow is probably 5 years old. She is a tiny thing, probably 350 lbs. Without going into the debate of why I would bother, it would...

How often is the VET wrong????

Does no one use an ultrasound machine??? I have my cows checked in early November, I have to start feeding my hay in December in the pen so if they are open I want them gone by then. The bull goes out July 15th and he stays out. I don't separate him back off from the cows. If a good cow...
