    Weight for breeding heifers

Read your feeding program for grown cows on the protein tub thread. Do you mind to elaborate on your heifer development program? Do you just feed them higher quality hay, or do they get additional supplement?

    Punch testing for pregnancy.

I've got a question for you SL. You have any studies that prove "punching" doesn't result in miscarriages? This thread is funny. I do admire your persistence, though.

    breeding box or chute

The first year, we tried to AI in the squeeze chute and that was a disaster. We built a breeding box for about $300 and for AI, that has been the best money we've spent. They stand so much calmer. We never really tried in the alley, but that might have been just as good.

    synchrony report

Five trips through the chute seems like too much for me unless conception and pregnancy rates went way up. I admit we only settle 65-70% with our current AI protocol, but I have usually had my limit of running them through the chute by then, anyway. I guess if it increased the pregnancy rate...

    Natural Service pregnancy rates

Thanks for the responses. I am reconsidering whether or not AI is worth the time and money, but we didn't really start calving in a controlled season until we started AI, so I was having some difficulty with coming up with a good calculation.

    Natural Service pregnancy rates

If you turned out your cows with one bull per 30 head, what percentage would you expect to be pregnant during the first 21 days? And what percent in the first 2 heats?

    Sexed Semen

Are you planning to use it on cows or just heifers (besides your flush cows)? If so, have you already used it on cows? What kind of conception are you getting first service and how does that compare to your normal rate?

    CED Lesson please

I doubt these low accuracy EPDs will truly reflect the calving potential. It may move up or down as these bulls get progeny on the ground. I do know Bundaleer Xroad is a fairly popular sire and his BW epd has not dropped at all and is one of the highest in the breed. I personally wouldn't...

    CED Lesson please

I wouldn't use any of those bulls on heifers, especially the 2 with Bundaleer Xroad close up in their pedigree. If I were you, I'd just call Diana and ask her about the bulls and if she has any suitable for heifers. I'm sure she would be glad to discuss it, and I have found her to give good...

Moving up calving / AI synchronization

I agree also. What synch protocol do you use or do you think they are all about the same as far as moving up your breeding season?

Moving up calving / AI synchronization

Some folks are obviously better than others, but most of the literature shows about 50-60% with estrus synchronization. I think Dun breeds on natural heats, but I just don't have enough time to watch for heats, round up and AI twice a day for 21 days.

Moving up calving / AI synchronization

GnRH and Lutalyse is the protocol we were planning to use. I know some cows who aren't cycling will come in with this protocol, but didn't know if there was anything more reliable or if it was a total waste of time and money for cows less than a month from calving. If I could get 90%+ to...

Moving up calving / AI synchronization

We are getting ready to AI. This year we had a few stragglers that barely made it in our breeding window. They calved about 3 weeks ago and I haven't seen them in heat, yet. We plan to start synchronizing the cows this weekend. I am wondering if anyone here has suggestions for synchronizing...

    Easiest Way To Synch?

GnRH followed one week later by Lutalyse will give somewhat tighter synchrony than 2 shot lutalyse.

Cow Frame Size, interseeded clover year 2 and some pictures

I like your idea of keeping heifers out of the cows that more closely approximate your ideal and selling heifers out of the others. I think it's easier to pick quality replacements out of your own herd. Out of curiosity, what is the frame score/weight of the T21 bull? What size bull do you...

Friends new yearling bull what ya think?

I think you could theoretically breed hereford X angus to a second hereford X angus and end up with 100% hereford, but the gene at each locus would have to be from the hereford side and as there are millions of genes, the likelihood of that happening is essentially zero. I don't really want...

    AI Synchronization

We have AI'd our herd for the last 2 seasons and are getting ready again. The first year, we used Lutalyse and CIDRs with ok results, but didn't like the expense. Last year we bred on natural heats, but I can't invest that amount of time spread out over a month this year. I have read some on...

    AI'd some cows

www.agtechinc.com/store/product.php?pro ... 272&page=1 Actually goes over the sheath. Supposed to add extra protection against infection although I don't think we've had any problem with that. The only reason I asked is when I took an AI class at a large dairy, the guy that did their AI work...

    AI'd some cows

Any of you use the sheath protectors? Do you think it makes any difference?

    AI'd some cows

I've done it both ways and find it equally difficult with either arm.
