The first year, we tried to AI in the squeeze chute and that was a disaster. We built a breeding box for about $300 and for AI, that has been the best money we've spent. They stand so much calmer. We never really tried in the alley, but that might have been just as good.

Five trips through the chute seems like too much for me unless conception and pregnancy rates went way up. I admit we only settle 65-70% with our current AI protocol, but I have usually had my limit of running them through the chute by then, anyway. I guess if it increased the pregnancy rate...

Thanks for the responses. I am reconsidering whether or not AI is worth the time and money, but we didn't really start calving in a controlled season until we started AI, so I was having some difficulty with coming up with a good calculation.

If you turned out your cows with one bull per 30 head, what percentage would you expect to be pregnant during the first 21 days? And what percent in the first 2 heats?

Are you planning to use it on cows or just heifers (besides your flush cows)? If so, have you already used it on cows? What kind of conception are you getting first service and how does that compare to your normal rate?

I agree also. What synch protocol do you use or do you think they are all about the same as far as moving up your breeding season?

Some folks are obviously better than others, but most of the literature shows about 50-60% with estrus synchronization. I think Dun breeds on natural heats, but I just don't have enough time to watch for heats, round up and AI twice a day for 21 days.
