    simangus

Ok, I need some advice. I would like to cross some of our Angus cows with Simmental this year. My question is, where do I start. Would I be better to cross them with a purebred Simmental bull or a simangus(5/8sim and 3/8angus). I also have some Angus cows with some Hereford in them, would I...

    New AI Tech

Maybe post an ad on craigslist stating you will A.I. for others at no cost (free arm service, semen cost only). friend of mine did that and she got a few jobs around her. They were a lot of family type milk cow deals, but they were very happy to work with her and she got some good practice. Just...

    Ultrasounding

I was curious if anyone has there own ultrasound, to be more specific for repro work like preg checking? I'm sure they are costly, but I imagine they have come down in price some in recent years. I have nothing against our great vet doing it, but here's The reason I'm asking: We both work off...

    Preg checking

We have a couple cows like that. They are ones the kids have shown (big babies). They WILL NOT go in the alley to the chute. They too get their shots just standing around, I even AI them that way. Its hard to beat a good chute system though for everyone's safety!! Jenna

    Blood preg tests

I have a question on the blood pregnancy test. We have used them before and seemed to work good. What i'm wondering, can you send them into the lab in the winter? I have mailed them in before, but its always been earlier in the year when temps were not freezing. Will they freeze in the mail...

    Bovine Ecolizer+C20

Ok, so we give the Bovine Ecolizer+C20 to calves at birth. Its Clostridium perfringens Type C and K99 E. coli antibodies to provide scour protection for newborn calves. Well, guess its not available this spring. So does anyone know of who does have it or an alternative. Thanks for any ideas. Jenna

Ha, i too thought it was a secret behind closed doors kinda thing this morning. Got the same message, rang the doorbell at the gate but no access LOL..... Now the gate is wide open! Jenna

    Semen storage

Wow, things really are seasonal there aren't they! Thanks for sharing how things are done where you live, its interesting to see how they compare with "here"! I guess I take for granted that i can drive to the feed mill and they will make any type of feed I want year around. We too have some...

Bad Bag or Just Don't Look ?

We used to keep cows like that when we were building our beef herd, but I will admit they were usually the problem childs the next year. Some times the calf had so much trouble getting started sucking. Now we would probably cull her with the market. But saying that we have a OLD cow we call...

Cow rectum a appears to be restricted.

We've had a few dairy cows like that, maybe not to that extreme but similar. Not too long ago I went to AI one (jersey), and she was kind of like what you explained. I got her bred, but with extreme difficulty getting my arm in her (and i have a pretty small hand/arm) later the vet preg checked...

    Icy - In Dead Sleep

Its amazing how hard some calves can sleep. I sometimes am fooled when they look "dead" too. Thers been a few I have walked up too, rubbed their head patted them, they act like they are dead to the world! Then, they wake up and boom they are gone, very fun to watch!

    Complicated delivery?? Please reply, Thanks!

Any chance that this could of been twins? How big is this calf. I do know of cows having twins a few hours a part maybe longer.? Was the cow in a large lot when you noticed the bag/membranes the first time. It's prob. unlikely, but wouldn't be the first. Good luck with the lil guy, don't give up...

    ...just getting a little antsy...

Some big square or round bales can make descent shelters to block the wind if you have any around and bed good inside them. Good luck, maybe the weatherman will be wrong and it wont be too bad. Jenna

    i can do this

Sounds good, you got your hands dirty, so to speak, so when you do take the course you will have somewhat of a idea to know whats going on in there. When I took the course, I had already been doing some "practice ai's" as my dad taught me a lot. Sounds like you have a great tool in your box with...

    What would you do?

I'd let her go with the way you describe her. Sounds like she shouldn't have too much trouble and being shes at least 2 months along, I would try to not use lute if at all possible. Jenna

Bad way to start the morning. Graphic picture

Sorry for the loss, hope you can salvage some meat. We had a cow do this last year, we caught it in time and were able to get the vet a put the uterus back in. We cleaned it up as good as we could before he got here, and got it back in and he sewed her up. She survived, but when we weaned her...

    Weight for breeding heifers

I have to agree on the somewhat younger breeding. We used to lean towards letting them get a little bigger, but it seemed that we were getting huge cows. We started breeding a little earlier, and it does seem as mature cows they are somewhat smaller and are raising just as nice, or nicer calves...

    Heifer Problems

unless she would be your number 1 or 2 cow, I'd sell her. The cull market says to sell her with the high prices. Even if you get her bred back, you will have to feed her for several months and its a very good possibility if you sell her short bred she will go as a slaughter cow anyway. Just my...

    Stolen Milk

What a pig! Does anyone have corn silage around that you could get some from?, that is great stuff to put weight on cattle. But if not sounds like you have pretty good feed for her. You need a donkey, and let him try to suck that, one kick will fix him :) Jenna

    dead heifer

Might be a long shot, but could there be any noxious weeds in the feed you are feeding? Maybe CRP hay? Just a thought.? Could explain a abortion as well, maybe leading to other issues. Jenna
