    Something never tried

I’d leave him a bull. In western Canada he would sell easy. If he turns out real good he will bring good money. Even if he is sub par he’d sell.

Keeping a twin heifer for a replacement

Jeanne is correct that Simmentals twin a lot. I twin between 6 and 12 per cent a year. It’s a real pain most of the time but on a good year you have extra calves to graft when needed and the extra calf is straight bonus money. My record cow had 7 sets in 8 years. She lost the last set, they...

    Shorthorn Bull-Ronan

Blue roans have been hot on the prairies for a few years. Several I have seen have been out of purebred Simmental dams and bulls or heifers bring more than they are worth most times for breeding stock

    Young bull

People don’t seem to understand how much money a sorry assed bull like this costs you. He will sire hard doing offspring that get discounted and you will develop a reputation as selling poor cattle. The buyers remember. No idea what your situation is but if you don’t have many cattle consider...

    She will kill you

When the kids started helping out years ago it took one year to cull the handful of crazies I had tolerated to that point. It ain’t worth it. Had a first calf heifer this year that always would shy away. Have used the sire three years no issues and have a full sister and two maternal sisters...

    Bought a few

Like the looks of 69. He should put some growth into them and is coloured right.

    2022 calves so far

Looking good. Looks like lots of dry ground for them to run on. I managed to keep most alive this year. Lost a couple sets of twins and have one purebred bull calf that seems determined to die at some point. Still too much snow here.

Are we too dependent on EPD's?

I look at the sale picture first, if I like what I see I move on to pedigree, look at the dams production record, if I like what I see there I wait for the video to come out. Then I might call a sales rep or the producer if I’m interested and get another opinion. The sale reps know what I like...

    Twins on old cow

I have found through experience that split twins generally produce an exceptional freemartin heifer that weans in top 5 per cent of heifer calves and a runt bull. not complaining though because the runt bull is pure profit.

    Breed back earlier

I find the spring calves, later half of the May-June calves will breed back quicker as a group, a lot of that has to do with environment. Green grass don't show up til around the first of June here most years. With the proper mineral program it helps too. Am anticipating a poor start to my...

    Wow..what a day/breach/etc..

Saw a stuffed one when I was a kid at a school of all places. Freak of nature.

    Weaning Rate Percentage ?

Personally I don't want those types of heifers in my herd if they can't breed back while raising a calf. A lot of them look real rough every year after weaning for a bit but they either get in calf or hit the road. They get back in shape over the winter and look great by calving. After a few...

    bull with bad attitude

I have a bull calf with a broken hind leg gimping around my yard due to a similar issue, the old bull went to market the next week, got no tolerance for attitude problems. threw a young yearling I was holding over to clean up what was left.

Update On Heifer with CIDR left in her for 5 months

Nice looking calf. The dam of your cow is one of the best pictured cows I've seen in any breed. If your breeding her Full Fleck I'd recommend you use a horned bull. One cross of polled is ok but if you get too much polled with the Full Flecks in my opinion and from experience you start to...

    Young heifer calving

Sorry guys you all missed my point. The hetro polled comment was only added to clarify I'm positive it's off the heifer bull I had in the pasture. There was no other option but the fact the calf is solid red and horned just backs up even more it's his. To calve 9 days over in April she would...

    Young heifer calving

Been there done that. Earliest I've had is a heifer born Feb 23 that calved first week in April the following year. Lost em both that time. She was bred to the herdsire. My fault I was hauling the kids around to something or other and wasn't there. I usually run around 5% in calf to the...

CIDR LEFT IN HEIFER FOR 5 MONTHS

I would have just asked for my money back plain and simple. Why have her bred late because of the sellers mistake.

    Heifer not coming into heat

My experience with cystic ones are they usually are constantly cycling. Like every week to 10 days. It could be they are already in calf. It could be they are just no darn good and need to become hamburger. Get a vet to check them out. Fertility is very heritable. You also say they are...

    Almost got me.

When her eyes are on you like in that picture and the ears come forward like that it's the cows way of indicating she is locked and loaded. If you aren't already running it's likely too late. I'll bet you she'd run right over top of her own baby to get at you.
