Question about feed for pregnant cow.

If she gets too fat on that grain you may very well have calving problems, i.e. calf too big. Watch out if her brisket is really plump and if she has fat "pads" around her tail head. Good luck.

To what age do your herd bulls generally last?

Our Silverdawn Jumbo murray grey herdsire lasted until 9 years. We had 7 excellent calf crops from him and still have some semen stored. He was reliable for both sons and daughters.

Not sure what going on with my heifers

First you go to http://www.biotracking.com or call them at 208-882-9736 and ask for their info/instructions re how to collect the blood and how to send it to them(not an extra postage item). They will mail the instructions to you. Then go to http://www.air-tite.com and order the items you need...

Not sure what going on with my heifers

Yesterday I sent off 4 blood samples to Bio-tracking in Moscow Idaho to check to see if 4 of our embryo recipients are pregnant or not. The test is cheap - I think it was 2 or 3 dollars each & you get the results fast by email. Recips should be tested 32 days after the embryo was created; AI...

    Line breeding

We are breeding this Oct 05 bull to some of his paternal half sisters - I guess that is linebreeding. Many of our spring 07 calves have a sire that is also a few generations back in the pedigree. So far we've had good luck with it.

Take a look at some of the farms/ranches listed as producers on http://www.eatwild.com. Some of them are organic and have their own websites with prices, etc

    Embryos

Well, she has a huge rib cage - and can hold a lot of forage. She had a calf on her...so what do you do? Wire their jaws shut? 2004 was a good summer regarding rain and all our cattle were probably 100 lbs heavier than in other summers. 2005, on the other hand, was not so good and 2006 was...

    Embryos

We have not weighed her in I-don't-know-when. Our scale set-up is a real pain in the a$$. It is not a permanent installation, and we have to drag the trough into the loading chute and then fix blocking doors at the front and rear--hook everything up and then take it apart when finished. The...

    Embryos

Suzie Q is about as wide as she is tall! Isn't that what you call "spring of rib"? Anyhow she is/was on straight grass; the photo was taken in July and we certainly don't feed in July. Now, at times we have put out hay in August during our more-and-more regular droughts. Suzie is truly an...

    Embryos

Our best record was with one donor cow called Suzie Q - we got 31 grade one embryos from her at one flush. She got a treat after that event!

    Is this heifer a cull?

I would probably give her about 10 to 12 cc of Banamine; wait a couple of hours and then bring in a dog on a leash to the pen where she and the calf is staying. If she doesn't even try to get up and "save" the calf, then she's probably a goner.

    Need AI Advice

    1. in chute, insert CIDR 2. in chute, give lutalyse & go ahead & glue on Kmar 3. pull CIDR out...if they are not afraid of you, you can do this outside a chute. Detailed directions are on the CIDR package---Valley Vet supply has them on-line. Kmar is a very good indicator I think.

    Need AI Advice

We are using CIDRs as instructed on the package, and then glue on a Kmar heat detector....works great. The stick-on Kmars are not as good as the original(messy) glue type.

    Need some help

We have come across a blood test to check for pregnancy at 30 days after AI. Collect the blood at home...from under the tail(they provide instruction photos)..send it in to lab in Idaho & you get the results in about3-4 days...at $2.25 per test. That sure beats the cost of a vet preg check...
