Hay rings with the skirts at the bottom ?

Well, how did the bar kit work out? I just bought two of the Century poly rings and seems like they are wasting a lot of hay. I don't see the skirt helping as much as bar kit. Thought about making my own bar kit.

    Cow behavior and hay

Come on lighten up a little, that is an often repeated phrase on here.... Didn't mean it as absolute fact. :D They can amaze me at some of the things they can do and five minutes later be peeing in a mudhole while drinking out of same mudhole and have perfectly good water 50 feet away. Then...

    Cow behavior and hay

There is an obvious reason for this ... There is always a possibility that old moldy hay has some kind of deadly toxin, and no self respecting cow would pass up a chance to induce abortion or die a slow agonizing death, cause we all know. "Cows are born looking for a way to die"

    What is Normal Forage

"Serious gastrointestinal problems have occurred, including bloody vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and low blood pressure." That was copied from poison control for people. Makes me want to down a handfull. :D This is copied from Pet Poison Control and included cattle. All parts of this...

    What is Normal Forage

That is because they are eating the cherry leaves green off ofthe tree. Once the leaf wilts it contains prussic acid (cyanide) and I promise it will kill them. I don't know about poke berries, birds sure eat them a lot.

    Pigweed and pokeweed

Polk doesn't have to be boiled several times, if so I would be deader than a hammer. Mom used to cook it in a skillet somehow. Wife doesn't like to cook "weeds"

    string wing

I just bought a String Wing, 5' wick. I have a bunch of buttercup coming up in the field where I winter the cows. I realize it's kind of late, but I have a lot of clover under it. Makes me angry thinking about it getting all the moisture and nutrients out of the ground. I have...

    army worm strategy

About a month ago i turned the cows in my front pasture and didn't have any reason to go back further, that I knew of. Two weeks ago I went back to a ten acre pasture that was mostly common Bermuda. Army worms had all but destroyed it, I sprayed with Karate and got some pretty good rains. The...

    Screwed up last night

I am married to a building inspector ;-), She is not a real building inspector, but if I patch a fence with a pallet the penalties are pretty severe... Something to the effect " doing it right the first time"

concrete cattle waterer in pond bank

I've had one in the dam for 12 years and not leaked yet, it has a seep collar though. Has never froze yet, except for the time I forgot to turn the trickle valve on...

    pelletized lime

Kind of sheds a light on why they have always said "never say never" Well he didn't exactly say never but he implied never. I think it would hold up in court :D

    pelletized lime

Kenny I think it was really cruel to dredge this up from the past, the most disheartening aspect of it,is I didn't do it first :D And I bet Virginia is one of those states where spouses own things jointly even if they don't want to...

    Johnsongrass/Prussic acid

If you want to know for sure about Prussic acid, buy cyantesmo strips. Get a Ziploc bag, pick Johnson grass from more than one spot, crunch it up add a small amount of water, add a short strip of cyantesmo paper. Put in the sun or a very warm spot, if Prussic acid cyanide is present the paper...

    johnson grass

As soon as gun deer season is over I will turn my cows into my pasture in question. It got down to 15 degrees the other morning, so I think it should be sufficiently dead by now. It probably has been safe for a long time, but it will save me some hay in a couple of weeks. So I guess it...

    johnson grass

It was 27 degrees Friday morning and it looks like all the Johnson grass has turned a nice shade of brown. I think after 10 days or so it should be safe. Right? It has came a couple of frosts already but none of them were killing until Friday. Or do I need to wait for another freeze?

    johnson grass

Well crap, I asked that question somewhere else and got a noncommital answer, so I have kept the cows out. It will be toxic for sure after tomorrow, it is supposed to get down to 27 degrees Friday then warm up. I don't know where this Johnsongrass came from, I haven't had it in a long...

    johnson grass

I bought the same test strips Isomade has and I am feeding hay now because my pasture keeps testing positive for Prussic acid. It is the new growth showing prussic acid, it was not frosted on at least until night before last. I am just going to wait for a hard freeze and hold them out for a...

    smart weed

Is that why it's called smart weed? I always wondered, I don't ever recall getting up against it since it is so low to the ground.

From what I have figured out you should not have a problem with nitrates as much rain as you have had. Also it seems to me it has been long enough after your last good rain that prussic acid should be gone. If you are nervous like me you can get a cyantesmo strip test kit. I bought mine from...
