    Fertilzer and Cattle

Is it safe for cattle to be on pasture when fertilizer is applied. I’m thinking it’s possible they could eat a pellet.

    How’s your grass?

Leaves on the trees are brown. Looks like fall but feels like hell!

    How’s your grass?

I picked up 3 bales yesterday evening and told my hay guy to bring me 40 on Thursday. I’m taking a steer to freezer camp Thursday and will be down to 7 cows. If we start getting some rain this fall, I plan on getting 3-5 more head in December.

    Texas drought

Listening to it now. Maybe I can jinx the weather.

    Texas drought

I wish I was sitting on the front porch watching it rain and listening to SRV’s Texas Flood! 😂

    Texas drought

It’s depressing…I just starting raising cattle in 2021 and been in a drought for 2 of the 3 years. Definitely not what I envisioned.

    How’s your grass?

I have a few bales left from last year. Luckily my hay guy has set aside what I need for this winter. If he can’t limp me along through this dry period then I will have to look around for some. He got me through all of last year though and I told him I would always use him as my hay source. Some...

    How’s your grass?

I’m with you buddy. Put my first bale out Saturday. Put it in the shade not too far from the water trough. Hopefully they don’t burn to much energy. I did not get a single drop of rain this past weekend either. Looked like it went through Lufkin.

    How’s your grass?

Just got out to my place today. It’s been 2 weeks since I’ve been here. Man it’s dry! Grass is all dead or gone. Going to put a bale of hay out tomorrow morning. The girls still look good, but we better get some rain soon. I guess people around here will start selling off soon.

    How’s your grass?

Burning up in my neck of the woods. No rain in 4-5 weeks…it started being dry earlier last year. I was hoping this year we would make it through the dog days, but don’t look like. 20-30% chance Saturday into Sunday. Then no chances after that…

    How’s your grass?

Got a little rain Thursday, but need some more. Hay guys are busy with the 2nd cutting around this area. A lot better than last year that’s for sure! I have not priced hay yet, but expecting/hoping for $10-$15 less per bale compared to last year’s price.

    How’s your grass?

Grass is turning brown here. Need rain soon or we are going to be back in the same boat as last year.

    How’s your grass?

Rye grass is still looking good here. Talked to my hay guy this evening and he said the 1st cutting of summer grass probably won’t be until early/mid June. We have had good rain so far this year. Sure hope it continues!

    Crab Grass

No hay field here, just some acres amongst the trees to try and grow a grass that can thrive in this sandy loam soil. Crab grass and Bahia is my best chance at success. There ain’t no lime truck or coastal Bermuda sprigger going to roll through here with any success. Doing the best I can with...

    Crab Grass

We have had a lot of rain since Wednesday. I don’t have a rain gauge, but with my calibrated eye I’m thinking 4-5” over the past few days. It’s still sprinkling now. Thank the lord for the rain, but would be nice to spread it out over a few weeks. Just praying we don’t hit Death Valley in June...

    Crab Grass

Man we have been getting pounded here since yesterday. Sure wish I would have put some fertilizer out, but it’s still too high for me. I’m rolling the dice with rain and cow poop!

    Crab Grass

The last pictures I posted of my crab grass was from May 8, 2021. This was from May 30, 2021 to give you some idea of how it did. This is the Big Dal variety.
