    Th in Shorthorns

If she is bred to a negative bull, there is no chance that she will have a dead calf from TH. You have to have 2 recessive genes (one from the dam and one from the sire) for the calf to be dead. You will have a 50% chance carrier and 50% chance clean if bred to a negative bull (I think those...

    Which clipper to use.

I would get the Andis 2 speed with a #10 blade, blocking blade, and a medium blending blade. All work wonderful on clipping calves for show.

    Long hair or short hair?

For the most part, the cattle that are "groomed into shape" have the best shape to begin with. Also with grooming, the kids work with their animals more and learn the art of clipping cattle. I definatly think long hair is a good thing.

    Eclipse anyone?

One of ours cows had a salute heifer in April. She's really thick and hairy but I would not use him on heifers, she was about 95# when she was born.

    Most Hated Show Calf Chore?

I love blowing out the cattle (and two blowers with a splitter makes it go really fast) but I hate their clipping heads.

    Sticks

I like using the 5ft sticks for bigger steers and heifers and smaller ones when I show calves. If I didn't have a 5ft stick for my steers I wouldn't be able to reach his back feet if I needed too and I'm assuming that's why the 5 yr old had a longer stick.

    2007 Club calves

We had a Sin City born last April and he was #100, I would not use him on a heifer. However, he does have a good show look and is growing like crazy.

    Hair

What are you washing with? Try Dawn or Joy dish soap to cut the grease. You might also want to try sullivan's hair stimulator to help make the hair pop.

    Prospect calf sires

Skcatlman- My Sin City is a 4/06 calf and last weekend his hip height was 47.5 and is well muscled for any breed. He also has a great disposition but his mom has always been calm so that could have came from her. The birthweight was a problem because the cow is smaller and needed he needed to...

    low bw shorthorn bull

If you are breeding to an angus and WANT a shorthorn bull I would use KOOL. He IS a TH carrier but if it's a terminal cross to an angus that won't matter. We had calves from him that were #60. We have also had #100 Sin City calves and I would not use him for heifers.

    Show Calf Opinions

If you hold his head up as high as you can he will look a lot better in the picture. Nice calf.

    Snotty Nose

We give naselgin (sp) and we get it from our vet and give it a few days before we leave for a show. It's somewhat easier to give then a shot because it just squirts up their nose. Most cows don't like it though and we blindfold them before we give it so they can't see it coming lol.
