    Hay vs. Haylage

How do they compare nutritionally (on average,I know it will differ depending on the field/whats in it/etc.), particularly when feeding dairy cattle?

    Recycling Bale Wrap

Are there programs for this in the U.S.? What do you do with all your bale wrap? I am trying to decide which would be better for the environment and the farm (aka the wallet)-wrapped haylage or chop it and build a bunker silo?

    Cloth or paper?

Pretty gross...and scary that some people do things like that! There's a farm around here where the milkers have to hang up the filter sock after milking so that the owner can inspect it and make sure they did a good job. Thanks for the responses too.

    Feeding Fermented Colostrum

Does anyone do this? I'd never heard of it or seen it but was reading about it online and was curious.

    Cloth or paper?

Do you use cloth or paper towels for milking? We have always used paper, but I became interested in the cloth/microfiber towels as a sustainability tool. When I thought about it though, you have to wash them in hot water and dry them in the dryer, which probably has a worse environmental impact...

    Building a milking barn

Thanks for the suggestions. We have been looking into buying a place so we decided to do the math and see how much it would cost to build one ourselves and then just buy the house/land. My boyfriend and his father would be able to do most of the building, water, and electric themselves, so I...

    Building a milking barn

I'm trying to piece together how much it would cost to build a 50 or 60 head dairy barn with stancions, rotary gutter, and a pipeline milking system. I was wondering if anyone could point me towards some places where I might find these types of numbers or where I could comparison shop for...

    Low Stress Handling Techniques

I saw Dr. Locatelli on "The Cattle Show" on RFDTV talking about this subject. It was really interesting, I recorded it so I could go through it again and maybe try some of the techniques. I think some of them could definitely come in handy when you're on your own!

    Rear Feet not right

laminitis is a metabolic thing, usually happens around calving time, if the cow isn't getting the proper nutrition or eating enough. There are different severitys, so you don't always notice it right off. This link has some more info on it if you want: http://animsci.agrenv.mcgill.ca/courses...

    Rear Feet not right

What do you mean by folding up? the hooves or the legs themselves? If it is the hooves I would say laminitis but if she eats well and gets all the nutrients she needs than probably that's not the case.

    Sick Cat

We have used penicillin on our barn cats when they have respiratory-type illnesses and it has worked well. I don't want to suggest you do something off-label or something that might hurt her more than helping her because I am not a vet!! But that is just my experience with it. Hope she is alright.

    found something in my pasture

Genius  This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have read in a while. The most exciting thing I've found in my pasture was a couple of pot plants. Someone had been fertilizing them and everything. Man, cows are more interesting than we thought..sex, drugs, jeezzz

First trip to the Sale Barn.

Interesting story. Sounds like you had fun and learned a lot. The metal tags are probably for some sort of vaccination or something...I know in Maine the animal gets one after a certain vaccination/test by the vet...I don't remember what maybe brucellosis. They also put them on 4-H steers that...

    windy

It was very windy here as well the past couple days. I was surprised we didn't lose power. The cows were in the barn that's for sure. we got rain with it too...its so weird the ground is bare and muddy in February for crying out loud! Usually at this time of year we'd be getting blizzards and...

    Murray Greys from NZ

Very nice pictures and animals. I don't know much about them and I've never seen one in "real life" but from what I've heard they seem to be a great breed. They sure look productive.

    A little help please (calf)

As milkmaid said, if he was given a shot it could be from that. If not, it sounds like an abscess of some sort..if he is acting fine I wouldn't worry about it too much, just monitor it.
