    Milking shorthorn cross?

You know my cow. The sire of the calf was a milking shorthorn. Is this calf going to have horns... it sure looks like it. She has two little nubs and their looking like they are going to break through soon. If so. When should we dehorn? Is there a kit or is this a vet thing? Mike

    Mastitis Cow with calf

The mastitis seems to have been clearing up. The milk returned about two weeks ago to a normal look but the udder still had an inner hard feel to it (like a bag with a brick in it). Now the udder is softening and the hardness seems to be shrinking. *Plugging ears* No we didn't treat with a...

    A few (groan)

I saw an interview on TV where this one old farmer won ten million in the Lottery. Naturally he was asked what he was gonna do with all that money. He kinda scratched his head and said, "Not sure as I know right off. Guess I'll keep farmin' till it's all gone." ..................... A...

    The calf.

Someone wanted to see a picture of it a while back. (sorry) Those are the best ones I have right now. Just a jersey-shorthorn mix, but I guess for our needs she will do pretty well. Last time I weighed her (I think about 1 1/2 weeks after birth) she was up to 80#. I know that isnt...

    Kids playing with the calf?

Know in bull calfs you shouldn't pet around the head and such. Was wondering what the thought were on heifer calves? Also the calf likes to play with them by if they run away from it she will run after them then they turn and chase it. Is this ok or is it more likely to make a cow that will be...

Dont even obey their own laws and ?Our Drug Partners?

Dont even obey their own laws Just ran across this while browsing the news. Know it is not the first time. http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/28/darfur.protest/ Now I figure these senators thought, 'Ill get arrested and everyone will say, boy they care'. To me all it says is they refuse to...

    Just wondering (calf first eating)

When does a calf normally start actually eating ANY hay or grain. I ask because I thought it was common with dairy calves to start on the 4th week. Our calf (which we have kept in with the cow) is already starting. She's coming up on her second week. Was milking the cow this morning and watched...

    Chernobyl Anniversary

Yep today (or actually last night at midnight) was the 20th anniversary. 1986 (I was 11 but for some reason dont remember a thing about it except I seem to remember a news report about radiation detection in european countries). The Chernobyl powerplant in Ukraine had a meltdown at about 1:25am...

    Normal weight gain

I have read that a calf should gain over a pound a day, is this correct? Being our first calf and cow I have attempted (with equipment on hand) to note the calfs weight gain and so far it looks like 5 or 6 pounds for the first week. Normal or should it be better? Thank you Mike PS. Great to...

    (Dairy) CMT

Is CMT accurate enough to use alone to make sure a cow is over a case of mastitis? For consumption I mean. Also what is the standard practice after a cow is over mastitis for putting those teats back into the milk collection? (meaning milk out so many times, or waiting so many days?) Thanks Mike

What makes it stink so bad :)

Why does a calf's paddies smell so bad... Smells like old bad cheese... whoooooh. Is it because they drink nothing but milk? ;-) Mike

Once more on feeding a dairy cow

Ok. I know we have been through this before. As I read it talks about 4lb/day of grain plus free hay for a cow about to calf and then bring the dry feed up to about 10% the cows weight. Now how do you calculate (or know) what to feed? What amount of that dry feed should be grain? I mean I have...

    Mastitis? Or something else? (Dairy)

Here is a picture of a sample of the milk from this teat. There is some saw dust in there cause she knocked the bucket a little. But the stuff at the bottom looks like lumpy or stringy cream. When I first started milking this teat everything seemed ok. When I went to empty the bucket into...

    Milking

Beginner at milking. Never had to REALLY milk before (done it with machine). The cow finally let us milk it (some of course, it will be a little while before were good enough to milk quickly). Besides I was mainly wanting to just get a little out so she would be more comfortable (we were...

    Lifting the tail?

Someone tried to tell me that by forcefully lifting the cow's tail (straight up about) the cow wont kick! Sounds silly to me and didn't seem to work while he was here. Has anyone ever heard of lifting a cows tail for any reason? Someone also suggested covering the cow's head. I am...

    First heifer (Dairy)

There she is nursing. (To me she seems a little thin but then I've been looking at beef calfs on the board and in other's barns) Being new to cattle Im sure we put a lot more trouble in than was actually there but learned a lot for next time. (Making a list of don'ts and do's for the next...

Continued from "New Calf... Help!" in the breeding

This is continued from http://cattletoday.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21231 Calf is a 50-55Lb heifer. Light brown with white spots. Will put up a picture as soon as I can get one of her standing. She is leaping and playing so must be pretty healthy. Anyway Sister got up before me and was...
