    Cow with big belly

I have a Hereford cow that calved one month ago, but I swear she looks like she is still pregnant. Not bloat - is lower. She gets grass hay alternated with good hay and supplemented with grain in the evenings. She is an older cow - probably 9-10. It doesn't seem to bother her, but she looks...

    dwarfs

Is a dwarf born small, or are they normal size and just don't grow? I have a hereford calf that just isn't right - just can't put my finger on it - even looks like he has down syndrome! Just wondering if he is a dwarf. He was about 100# at birth but is much smaller now than a calf born the...

    Dummy Calf now nursing

I have a dummy calf which I have been bottle feeding since birth - now three weeks old. Mom very protective, but wouldn't let calf nurse nor let us help. Low and behold, yesterday we saw the calf nurse. Checked quickly and she does have milk. Question - should I continue supplementing with a...

    cattle literature

I also have that book and use it frequently. Because of that book, I now have colostrum frozen in case I have a mama that won't immediately feed her calf. My kids call it "the bible" because when anything comes up, I immediately go to that book for answers. I just recently have been getting...

    Call the vet!

Problem is that beginners don't know what constitutes an emergency.

    Vet website

I understand about calling the vet first. But, they specifically said IF I was to go online, to go to a vet website first and then here. I can't find any websites like that.

    Vet website

A lot of you keep talking about going to a vet website instead of this forum if there is a problem. Whenever I do a search on a subject about calving, etc., this is the only forum site I find and the only site with a lot of info. What vet websites are you guys talking about?

    Call the vet!

I have personally learned to call the vet first, but even when we did call the vet, it sometimes takes 2-3 hours before you get a call back as they are out on farm calls. And then when you find out it is an emergency, they can't get there for 2-5 hours. Our 2 vets cover 2-3 counties in this...

Heifer in labor >8 hours - Help

Yes - heifer is OK. She got extra special care last night and extra hay this AM. Will keep her separated until tonight to make sure she is OK. Vet said to sell her, she is too short and squatty and might or might not have a problem next time. I think we will take his advice.

    Heifer in labor

It's nice to hear some encouragement - this is our first time with a malpresentation. We have books on the subject and take good care of our cattle - we are not big ranchers and don't try to act like it, just trying to make some extra money on our farm. If you don't learn from your mistakes...

    Heifer in labor

Tail first presentation, dead calf. Mom OK. Vet took a long time to come, hours, but I guess he already figured it was dead. We have learned from our mistake and misunderstood the stages of labor. Shame on us.

Heifer in labor >8 hours - Help

Vet came - tail first, dead. Vet told us it was a very weird presentation and hard to detect to someone new to calving. Learned from our mistake. Yes, thought it was stage 1 when it was actually stage 2. Shame on us, but I came here for advise, not ridicule.

Heifer in labor >8 hours - Help

Our heifer has been in stage 1 labor for eight hours. How long should we let her go? No feet sticking out or anything yet, but she pushes and strains on and off, lays down, gets up, paces, etc. Not sure if this normal or not.

    Heifer in labor

We have had a heifer in stage one labor since this AM around 7. She lays and pushes, gets up and pushes, walks around, paces, etc. But there has been no legs sticking out or anything. How long should we go before we call the vet? It is now almost 8 hours.

    Big, dumb bull calf syndrome

We had a huge calf a week ago - wrote in because he looked "funny" - short neck, big knee joints, big head. Even though one of you told me to shoot him, I got a bottle of colostrum into him right away and bottle fed him for the past week to keep him alive. Last night, for the first time, he...

    One week post calving discharge

Cow calved a week ago - this AM I saw a pile on the ground of what looks like mucus with blood. Is this normal? It was about the size of a cow patty.

    Calf Question - Scours Question

I am not familiar with those medications. What are they and can I get them at Tractor Supply?

    Calf Question - Scours Question

I did not check his temp. I don't think we are in a Selenium deficient area - how do you know?

    Calf Question - Scours Question

He got colostrum from another cow that calved the same day. I read something about antibiotics killing all the good bugs thus scours. Just wondered about that. He seems to be "waking up" more each day. Just looks like a big dummy.
