    Ronnie

Nice pair, Ron! Always enjoy your pictures. Old-timers around here always say that a white- uddered cow is a good cow.

KT and A.J....it is hard to think that you guys are drying up....sorry to hear that. We are forecasted for a big rain here this Saturday...maybe 3 inches. You guys can't be more than 400 miles south of me? I am near 26525.

So who else needs this rain to stop?

It has been raining here in Southern Pa and Northern WVa for the last month. We only had a couple of 2 day breaks in the rain that we used to make some wrapped hay. I would like it to stop so I can get this hay all rolled up! How is everyone else getting along in the hayfields?

    Started buying pairs in Va

Sky...they tell me if consignor states that they want them sold as pairs at FLE, then if he isn't in the crowd to ask about changing to a cow-calf split when they come through....then they must sell as pairs. And yes highgrit Denver is going to be a big cattle trader in no time! I am planning...

    Started buying pairs in Va

I have a guy buying 10 or 20 pairs for me out of Va salebarns. I just plan to split them this fall. The first pair he got today was a 7 year old 1350# blk cow with 350# steer calf.....bought them for $1800. I am hoping pairs like this bring me close to $2400 this fall when I split them. I am...

    Praying for Hay Weather

Hey Ron....don't stress over your hay too much! I haven't made a bale of first crop yet. Some years I have 250 bales made and inline wrapped by the first of June.

    Signs of grass tetany death?

Cows have had a good loose mineral available all year long. I will look up the % of the magnesium. I use the round feeders that sit in the pasture and the cows flip up the rubber flap to eat the mineral. I just HATE to lose a cow....especially a good one! I am trying to be mad at myself for...

    Signs of grass tetany death?

I lost a 6 yr old cow today that was grazing a pasture that had been given a shot of nitrogen two weeks ago. She has a really nice 10 day old bull calf. Neighbor called and said a cow was struggling along the edge of the field. She died just as I got to her. Looks like she had been...

    My Green Kingdom

I enjoyed your pictures, Ron! Did the fields get a shot of fertilizer this spring? What are the evergreens in your woods.....cedar, or some type of pine?

    Pair prices around the country?

There are only a couple of small auctions in my local area, but the few pairs that come through have been crazy-priced.... for what the cattle were. Saw a 1300 pound pair(the calf was newborn), black cow, not much flesh on her, and she looked over 10 to me. Brought $1900. Also saw a couple...

    2 bred heifers 2 times this $

I watched that set go through Sky. They sold for $760 per head. They looked big to me for 662 lb cattle. That buyer is not a dummy. I have set there and watched him buy cattle all afternoon. If they get up to 9 wts until they calve, and he dumps them in a special sale instead of just a weekly...

    My cousin Timmy

Deepsouth....Sorry for your loss. This is a senseless loss of a very good man! Please keep us all informed on how this all proceeds. I hope they nail someone for this cowardly act.

Gooseneck trailer behind a road tractor with 5th wheel?

I am looking at pulling my gooseneck stock trailer behind a tractor truck. Is there a conversion you can get to snap in the jaws of the 5th wheel, and do they work good?

    Market Reports/Cow prices

Kenny, sounds like return-to-farm cows are a lot higher in western Va than they are up this way. And yes SKY....I did watch some of the sale today but I didn't get to see the bred cows or pairs...they seemed higher from your above posts?

    Market Reports/Cow prices

Hey Kenny, you have been coming up with some good threads lately, are you house-bound!! I also watch the Winchester replacement cow markets, and try to go down a few times a year. Those cows are just bringing a couple cents over kill price. What I see happening is that we just don't have the...

    Two Recent Calves

Are you raising him up to sell as a herd bull? It sure looks nice in Ky this early Winter, Ron! You must not have had as much rain and freezing and thawing as we have up here. I am looking forward to a freeze this coming week....mud gets old quick! Show us some pics of your feeding area in...

    PICTURES

All of your calves seem to really be growing fast, Ron! Up here in PA, there are many cattlemen that won't fall calve for the fact of not having the benefit of the lush grass to push the milk and bring the calves along.

Inconsistent Bred Cow Auction Prices ?

Here in my part of the country, I can buy cows at a regular weekly sale much cheaper than at a bred cow special sale. The special sales draw in buyers from the Midwest. The cows are aged and pregged and the buyers have the available numbers to fill their pots. The drawback of the regular sales...
