    Heat Detection

Thanks guys for the responses. I am using tail patches and one of the heifers and one of the cows I saw in standing heat, the other cow just had her tail patch rubbed completely off. I check them every night and every morning. And they rub most of their tag off with their tail, etc. but when I...

    Pasture Question

We have been blessed with some pretty good rain this year. The grass and weeds in my pasture is coming up faster than my cows can eat it. Would it be better to just let it grow or should I just brush hog it? Thanks, Phil

    Heat Detection

I have 2 cows and 2 first time heifers. One of the cows is about 9 yrs. old and the other is about 5 1/2 yrs. old. The two heifers are about 30 months old. On the 15th of June the two cows and one of the heifers came into standing heat. I couldn't take them to the vet to get them AI'd because I...

    Heifer Question

Well she finally calved today about 1 pm. She had a little heifer. I got there right after the big event. I did not see any after birth, but there is a cord hanging out of her about 2' long. Question: Should I leave it alone or is there something I should do about the cord? If left alone, could...

    Heifer Question

I have a first time heifer that was AI'd and she is due on the 8th. I spent about 3 hours tonight cleaning out the the barn and just watching her. She is not leaking anything, but she spent about an hour rubbing her behind on anything that didn't move. So my question is: Does this mean that...

    Heifer Question

Thanks guys for your input. Looks like the rain is going to be a little bit to the south of us, so I have her in a pen tonight and will take her in the morning. I was surprised to hear ya'll say to take her in today and have her AI'd. I thought if you saw them in standing heat in the morning...

    Heifer Question

I have a heifer that is in standing heat. She weighs 746 lbs. and was born on 1/17/12. I want to take her to the vet tomorrow and have her AI'd. We are supposed to be getting some rain tomorrow, so if that happens, I won't be able to move her out of the pasture if it is wet. My old truck can't...

    Calf Question

bse and limomike - thanks for the advice. I went to check on the cows this afternoon and for the first time since last year they were all out grazing in the pasture instead of around the hay bale. I was sure glad to see that. It is mild weather here today in OKC and we are even getting a little...

    Calf Question

I bought two heavy bred cows from the sale barn. One calved Dec. 16th and the other one on the 17th. They both weigh about 260 lbs. now. Their mothers are kind of wild and I do not want them to leave my place. I have a new fence and so far they have been pretty good and they stay at home. My...

    embarrassing question - need help

I think I would use my chain saw and cut some of the limbs into small pieces and then pile them up and put a little oil (from the last oil change) on them and get that started and just keep adding to it. I have always had pretty good luck doing it this way. Phil

    Naive I guess

Cross 7 - If you decide to put a chain and lock on your gate, I would suggest putting a chain and lock on the hinged side too, because the last time my gate was left open was because someone took it off the hinges. Phil

    Questions

Thanks everyone for your help! Anazazi - 50% of his mothers weight (or so) at 200 days. Thank you! I answered an ad that said two black angus heifers - $1.00 per pound. I bought them both and loaded them up. As I was getting ready to leave the daddy showed up and I remember thinking - OH NO...

    Questions

I have a cow that is about 3 1/2 yrs. old. She weighed 972 lbs. on 9/15/12. She has had a heifer calf and a bull calf. I sold the heifer calf last year. The bull calf was born on 8/2/12 and weighed 62 lbs. I had her AI'd on 9/15/12 and she took. Today I took the bull calf to the vet. He was cut...

    Head Butting and Pushing

Gonzo - She was given to me for letting a guy run his cattle on my place. He bought her at an auction three years ago for $130.00. She got me started in the cow business. I really do not have a clue what kind of cow she is. Thanks, Phil

    Head Butting and Pushing

Thanks for your comments. I brought Molly home this morning and put her in the pen until this evening. When I went to feed them I opened the pen up. Grace and Kelly went right after Molly. They fought for a few minutes and I kept putting feed in the feeders. All of a sudden Molly breaks and...

    Head Butting and Pushing

I'm going to bring one of my cows home from another pasture. She is due at the end of January. Every time I bring her home for at least 30 minutes her and the other cows head but and push each other. She definitely takes on any cow in the pasture and they seem to line up for her. My questions...

    About Average or Late

brihop - You're right and I was wrong. When I went to feed tonight the red was almost gone. I guess it was some of that good old Oklahoma red clay. Thanks, Phil

    About Average or Late

brihop - I don't think the red tint is clay. Floyd - In the beginning when we built the alley, I just had a head gate and after using it a few times and seeing how much power the cows really have, I cut it out and sold it. We installed a squeeze chute and I purposely left that gap thinking it...
