Bottle calf! Some say I'm crazy...

Went to a sale today since I had the day off. 3 day to week old split calves were $625-675, one a little older with a swollen front ankle was the least at $430. Glad yours is staying alive for you!
Holy smokes!
GOOD baby calves are certainly much higher here as well. Just ain't many real bottle calves available right now. He was the only one. Lots of 150lb and up calves tho. When they had to carry this one in the ring I knew no one would want it. But I was not gonna give more than 50. If someone else had bid, they'd a taken it. I swore I'd never buy another that couldn't walk into the ring. But here we are! 😆

If I get him healthy and going, he will make a nickel for a quick flip.

We got the colostrum replacer in him. He got tube fed the colostrum supplement this evening. He fiddled with the bottle a little bit, then we decided to go ahead and tube him. Small steps.

Considering skipping the morning feed tmrw and trying the bottle again tmrw evening.

If anyone can get one going I would put my money on you Murray. If this works you will add a lot of value fast.

Murry, is that all your hair hanging down in the picture tubing the calf, or did you have a helper?
Haha! Mine is not quite that long yet.....

This lil white calf is at a friend's place with the teeny tiny red heifer. I think there is pics of her a page or two back. Lots n lots of help!

Calves loose or never had a suckle reflex when they are deficient in selenium. One bottle calf of mine that was born here had no suck reflex so we tubed her colostrum. I got some selenium suppliment paste from the feed store, says it's for lambs and goats. I gave her some since I figured she was about the size of a goat. Next morning sucking like mad.

@MurraysMutts , I am sure you have told this before on one of your threads, but is Bessie dry right now? Or you other nurse cow?
Dapples calves sold a couple weeks ago and I dried her up. Bessie still has her two for a month or so. Not having a workable pen for my girls really stinks.
Looks like they are on mowed grass with a security camera !!

They are special 🙂
Hehe. They are at friends place. Pretty high tech! I didn't take any pics today, but the 2 little ones have their own AIR CONDITIONED shed!! 100 degrees all week here....

I'll pass that along! Explanation below......

On to today's update!!
Red is not mine. She belongs to the friend who has been caring for Whitey since I purchased him on Thursday.

Well......
Her daughter has fallen in love with the lil bull calf. Named him Albie I think it is.
Wanted to know what I wanted for him. I said that's just silly. U know what I gave for him. If ya want him, he's yours!
What I wanted for him was a good home. That's all.
Well today when I took some meds over, the lil girl gave me the 50 for the calf and some money for the colostrum replacer and supplement.

I'll find another one soon enough. I love it when kids take interest and sure enjoy helping when I can.

I'm such an enabler....... 🤣 🤣 🤣

You are a good man, Murray. And a great American!!

Like you say "Life is too short to NOT have a pet cow". :)

I wrestled with the thought of just giving her the dern thing. I was not worried about the money for sure.

But then the thought also occurred to me that too many times kids are given too many things for free. I think it detracts from a kids mindset or character or whatever. I'm struggling for the words right now.... 😆
But I think a kid will work harder and take more pride in what they do if they earn it!

Either way, I hope to add many more happy updates!

@TexasJerseyMilker they are on a quest for the selenium paste now. Hopefully one of the 2 farm stores that are open today have some. The stores are real big on backyard type stuff so I hope they have some.

TSC? People also give selenium injectable. Probably need to buy from a vet. I bet that calf is short of selenium. Good luck. He's a pretty little white Char calf. I wonder about the timing of the colostrum.

She found something at TSC. I also suggested a vet for an injection. Lol. We had the same thoughts on that one. Possibly even a B shot.

The colostrum was definitely his first meal. Do not know when he was actually born, but Meconium came shortly after tubing him. So it was definitely his first meal!

Thanks for well wishes. I hope the little guy comes thru.
