Land here is selling for $5000-8000 per acre so I have a fortune tied up there as well as the property taxes. Also it is fenced so I have to maintain them as around here without a fence some nut in a 4x4 will run through your meadows and put ruts in it. :(
Here 4x5's are selling for $55-60 roll...
Thanks.
I hate to quit doing my own hay but after 25 years its time to slow down and have some fun. Haymaking is nearly as bad as the dairy business (my grandpa and dad did that for 25 years) as when its time to cut hay you have to drop everything else and of course the cows got milked at 4AM...
I am out of the hay business and would like to lease out one of my fields. It's 18A of coastal bermuda grass.
I would like some kind of agreement where the lessee pays for the herbicide, fertilizer and lime. All that I will be responsible for is maintaining the fence around it.
Around here...
Thanks. Livestock business is doing fine but stock market is doing even better.
I purchased 13 bred Angus heifers this morning. Due to calve in the spring and bred to Gardiner and Express low birth weight bulls. $1900 each.
The hay producers are getting old just like the beef producers. Most figure it's easier to run a few cows than kill yourself driving 10 hours a day on a tractor and having to fix the equipment in the middle of a hay field with no shade and 100 degree temp. We need more young people in this...
I will have one 17A field baled and buy the rest. If that turns out to be a hassle I will run cows on it. Matter of fact I had a pond built on it last fall for that very reason.
As far as drought goes, I have a hay barn that holds 250 round bales. I try to keep it at least half full for...
Been doing it for the last 25 years. Since dad passed away two years ago it's no longer fun and lot's more work without him. I am getting rid of all of the hay equipment and will have one meadow custom baled and go buy the rest. I just ordered a Deere 5085M with front end loader.
I also bought a...
I just cut 18 pieces of 2 x 2 x 1/4" square tubing. Going through the flat sides takes lots of down force, once you hit just the two walls it's easy. Then when you hit the bottom flat side again you really have to press down.
I always try to cut metal so that I am going thru the least amount of...
Deere 6000 series has been discontinued as of last fall I believe. Now it's the 6 series.

The 6M series replaces the 6030 series while the 6R replaces the...
You are going to need some good hay and protein supplements for those heifers. Hay needs to be 11-12% protein and a TDN of upper 60's. I make 12% protein coastal with a TDN of mid 60's but not upper 60's, so you will also have to feed a supplement.
My hay costs me $25 bale just for the...
