    Bloody Nose???

Is a lung abscess fatal? This cow is a butterball she's so fat. Yesterday, I moved them across the road to another pasture and when they saw me opening the gate, they came running from about 100 yards away, and she was the lead cow. I looked at her about an hour ago and her nose looked fine, but...

    Bloody Nose???

What can cause a bloody nose/bloody mucus? Four days ago, I noticed one of my cows had fresh blood visible in both of her nostrils. I assumed she had been fighting and thought nothing of it. Yesterday her nose was clean as a whistle. Today, she has bloody mucus in both nostrils, but her...

    Thoughts on Deworming Nursing Calves?

I didn't phrase my question as well as I should. Is it OK to deworm while a calf is still nursing or best to wait until weaning?

    Thoughts on Deworming Nursing Calves?

I have about 30 calves born in December and January that have not slicked up (still looks like they have their winter coats), so I'm assuming they're wormy. However, a couple of old timers that hang around the sale barn told me I shouldn't deworm a nursing calf. These calves are 5 months or so...

Glad I didn't pack them tight

I don't mean any disrespect, but if you chose not to sell your cattle that day, did you end up spending and risking more in the long run than what the buyer was offering that day? You had: (1) the expense of hauling them to the auction...fuel, wear and tear on your vehicle, etc. (2) the expense...

Best Way to Sell 40 Cow/Calf Pairs

Update...I called the owner of a nearby sale barn, described what I had and he came out to take a look at them and bought them all on the spot, plus another 18 heavy-bred cows and 17 steers I had not planned on selling just now. This fellow runs several thousand head year-round and wanted them...

Best Way to Sell 40 Cow/Calf Pairs

I have 40 cows with calves I would like to sell. The calves are all four to five months old and have had their shots. The bull calves are not castrated. All the cows have bred back. Should I sell them all as 3-in-1s or should I sell the calves separately and sell the cows as pregnant replacement...

    What's Wrong With Her Eye?

I got her up this weekend and gave her penicillin and laid on the ivermectin pretty thick to try and minimize flies bothering her eye. As soon as I can get a picture sent away to a vet or vet school and hear back, I'll post and let y'all know what they say. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions.

    What's Wrong With Her Eye?

What's throwing me is that the growth will get larger, rupture, shrink to the size of a BB and start all over again. That doesn't sound like the behavior of a malignant tumor to me, but I'm not a vet and I've never had another cow with this condition. There is nothing on the surface of her...

    What's Wrong With Her Eye?

I have a three-year-old Charolais cow that's developed some sort of ever-changing cyst in her eye, right where the tear duct would be on a person. It will start out about the size of a BB, grow larger, erupt and expel green pus, shrink and start the cycle all over again. I've given her...

    Is Untreated Pneumonia Always Fatal

Quick Update: Was finally able to get the calf up late yesterday. Tolled the cows again and cut the mother cow out and sent her up the catch lane into the pens. LIke before, the calf had not come up, but when mama started calling, it came up to the barn. Through opening and closing different...

    Is Untreated Pneumonia Always Fatal

When making my rounds this morning, I noticed a sick calf lying on its side with foam coming out of its nostrils. It's about five weeks old. By the time I went to the barn and got my medicine ready, the calf was up and nursing when I got back. I'm assuming it's pneumonia. However, this morning I...

Cow Bringing Her Calf to Me

I've mentioned in other threads that my cows are pretty mellow. But there is one three-year-old brangus that's a little flighty...not a fence jumper, runner or fighter...just a bit nervous. She's fine as long as you stay on the 4-wheeler or gator or tractor, but step off and she steps back, but...

Video of a Cow Eating a Baby Chick

Below is a link to a video that shows a cow eating a baby chicken. Is this some sort of protein deficiency? I have geese that hatch out their goslings on my ponds each year, and something always seems to get the goslings. I was thinking coyotes, but maybe I have a herd of new suspects. The link...
