    when to feed alfalfa hay?

I wouldn't be worried one bit to feed some alfalfa along with the timothy hay. Timothy is alot better feed than people give it credit. We run our cattle on timothy fields in the winter and feed them mostly export timothy kick-outs when we need to feed hay. They do real well on it. We do feed...

    Getting Birthweights

I tie up their legs and use/hang them from a handheld scale. More times than not on the back of a pickup!!!! Not that all the cows are bad, but it makes living a healthy life easier.

    2007 Breeding Season

Adding on to Doc's prediction about 878 being used in the future, it's already happening. ABS claims that sales on him had begun to increase again this last spring. People have had a chance to get some daughters in production that have proven to be good cows, and they want to make more of...

    Best Bull Next 5 Years

I will be interested to see what becomes of Radar. I think he is a decent bull and with him being enlisted in the Circle A Ranch testing program, we will learn more about how produces for the real world, not just the show ring. If he would test out well, I would definitely use him to make baldies.

    Angus bull with muscle

I have seen some extremely thick, good structured cattle out of this bull. A breeder I know around here has had very good luck with him, and they are thick as I have seen for quite awhile. http://www.universalsemensales.com/deta ... ngus_id=37

    Freeze branding

I froze branded the heifers I kept for replacements this year with their ID number. I used 99% alcohol and liquid nitrogen. I clipped a few clear to the skin and on others I left a bit more hair to see what works best. On the blacks I held it for 30 seconds and I had a red one that I did for...

Anyone use grass seed hay to feed cows?

Yeah, you need to be careful that fescue straw is endophyte free, but bluegrass is fine. Bluegrass straw is really pretty good feed. You need a little alfalfa or protein supplement, but cattle really like bluegrass. We have seen them sort through and eat it before the better quality hay.

    Austrian Winter Peas to Graze

Anybody ever grown these to graze? We are looking for a way to stretch pasture so we can take a cutting of hay to help a pasture cash flow. Any info is appreciated.

    Registered Red Angus question.

When he does the transfer on the papers, just have him note the dates the cows were exposed to the bull on the reg. papers, then when the calf is born, you can register them in your name. He will be noted as the breeder still. That's how we do it with the AAA at least, I am sure its the same...

    branding required for bank financing??

I was looking into doing a loan on some cattle a few years ago and one of the bankers I was dealing with wanted me to go get a new brand to use on the cattle, with the banks name on the brand also. I am pretty sure you can figure out where I told him to go. I have always paid cash for...

    Pinkeye

Is the halter rubbing up close under her eye? I had some steers that I halter broke about a month ago and had one get an eye like that. I just put some terramycin ointment in it for a couple of days and it helped, cleared it up. You could squirt peniccilin in it a couple times a day and see...

    udder evaluation???

I try to do them when they calve. I have a hard time determining real well what a heifers udder will be like when they come into production. I look for levelness, and teat placement on weaner calves, but still hard to tell for me.
