Anyone feed the Rice hay last year?

I know there was alot of it baled here in Arkansas last year and sent to TX/OK. I had called our extension service to inquire and he advised against it (silica). Said he would rather buy rolled sage and supplement - my response was there may not be any sage hay!! I know a group from Texas cut...

Atten TX & OK drought survivors - HELP!

Appreciate all the input. I figure there's no better advice than from the guys who've been living it the last few years! I've got to have a plan - I'm not good at just winging it. I understand being flexible, but I need something. Seems like the concensus is to get the calves off early...

    Butchering a 2 y/o heifer/cow?

I bought her momma as a bred heifer. Her momma is a black crossbred cow and was bred to registered angus bull. The heifer is red and I had her bred to a hereford bull. The calf we pulled was a bwf bull calf.

    Butchering a 2 y/o heifer/cow?

Alan - If you're old enough to remember coke in 12 oz bottles, well the teats looked like 4 coke bottles hanging down from the bag! I'll try to remember to get a pic of it today and post it up. Btw - what slaughter date are you referring to?

    Butchering a 2 y/o heifer/cow?

Just had to pull a dead calf from a 2 y/o heifer. I was out of town (long story). In addition to the pull, she has a horrible bag! (she's a cull on the bag alone!) I was considering butchering her once she gets back into condition. Any comments/suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Black Baldies

I'd go herford cows with homozygous black Angus bull. I currently run angus (black) cows with a herf bull. Every year I get a few red calves mixed in. In my neck of the woods, it would be cheaper buying herf cows than black cows also. If I had it to do over again.....

FAIR price for hay for Texas and Okla

Before we all get too down on these hay guys that are on the good side of the hay market, remember if things turn around in Texas/OK next year and these guys want to buy back in and these heifers/cows that we are buying now for $600-$1000 will be selling for $1400 to $2000? Who's gonna reject...

    Bermuda Grass

Yeah I agree Brute - "in normal conditions". I was talking about drought or near drought conditions (which seems to be the norm lately!!)

    Bermuda Grass

What I noticed about the Bahai during the drought we had last year was when we did get a shower the Bahai would go from dirt to green overnight! Once the Bermuda went dormant it was done for the summer. I rent pasture and there is no way to fertilize ($). I wouldn't trade the Bahai for Bermuda.

    johnson grass

Any secret to putting the Johnson Grass up for hay? A guy right down from me has been cutting a big field of it and have considered asking him if he is selling. As best I can tell, he cuts, rakes and bales.
