Winter Garden 2014

Yep its that time again I started the prep last weekend.
What's planted thus far ?
1 row of curly kale and curly mustard
24 cabbage plants
24 broccoli plants
48 collard green plants

What's to come ?
Radishes... I promised Alan
more cabbage broccoli and cabbage
Purple top turnips
Willing to take any suggestions as to anything else.

I tried to miss the kids sunflowers and disc around them but it didn't work so well so they gave me the go ahead to cut them :lol2:

I made 4 rows so far and guess what they are straight :banana: :banana: :banana: :banana:

stuff is in the ground I will plant other in about a week so does not all come in at once.

I'm getting geared up for our winter garden as well and I might get started today if I can find some ambition laying around here somewhere. Onions, carrots, parsnip and salad stuff are must haves for us. I started some cabbage and about fifty broccoli plants two weeks ago but it's still a tad early for the rest of it. We always do the broccoli in bulk and freeze it and anything and everything you can imagine that you'd want on a salad gets succession planted all the way through spring so that we always have something different out there.

Thanks y'all.. cp tell me something how's your broccoli taste after freezing? Ours tastes like crap and we tossed it and now we only eat as it comes in no freezing. What's your secret? Toro come on now plant something for me even if just 1 collard plant. Lol

Ours tastes the same frozen as it does fresh, that's why we do it that way. My wife handles all of the preserving but I think she said blanching it precisely is the key to freezing most vegetables.

Oh OK. I have not perfected broccoli . Between my broc and cheese or broc and cheese baked taters or my wife packing broc and ranch for her lunch or salads we usually don't have much to freeze.

For me it's broccoli and mayonaise. :heart: I can eat that by itself for dinner.

What variety of cabbage do you grow? Do you do something to get more than 1 head per plant?

I forgot which kind I knows its the pointed head kind I can check in the morning. The only time I got more than 1 head was when I let it grow after cutting the head until april but it was only a lil bigger than a brussel sprout

I think you should everyone needs a winter garden

I have most of mine planted. Had some trouble with green beans for some reason. Planted them again. Maybe they will take this time.

I had problems with half runner green beans this year never will I plant those again. I also planted okra 3 times it came up but died as soon as it hit the surface.

Cukes, okra, and beans are just starting to flower. Corn is up good. Should get some decent yeolds off them before the frost gets us down here. First winter veggies go down in late September

That is crazy how different places are so different with growing times.

Well, I did get a late start on the garden. Technically you can get 1 spring garden and one summer garden here. Out first frost hits early jan on avg

Wow Hook, I wouldn't have thought you had to worry much about frost there.
Is it that cold for an extended period of time or just a few hit & miss nights?
