I know a guy, that's extremely talented. He's a one man show. Builds speciality machines for the garment industry. Builds mostly one of a kind machines. I was in his shop once. He showed me how fast a machine he'd made, could make a shirt collar I believe. It kinda shocked me. I asked how it could do it so fast. He said they insist on zero safety features, They slow production. Pictured a small child running this thi g. Made me sad.

I was watching the crap fishing show the other night and one of the captains was talking about how hard his father was on them while they were young. He said he finally realized one day that his fathers job wasn’t to baby him but to raise him to stand on his own two feet. I’ve always felt the same but think 90% think this is wrong. I’m not sure we’ll ever get back to teaching the majority of kids the value of working hard and making your own way.

Remember looking out over a hay field with a 1000 + square bales to be hauled see the humidity rising like smoke...work all day for 10 bucks..that and a glass of water would kill a kid today ...heck it would kill me now..
 
I'm against all the age restrictions but I do believe in some basic safety. Its fun to talk about the old days but there were a lot of lost limbs and lives. With that said, it has definitely tilted to the extreme in the other direction now. All the safety is actually making the work place more dangerous now. It has come full circle.
 
About a two years ago we got in trouble for having a minor work for us. The girl was the 13 yr old daughter of our manager. She didn’t actual work for us but would ask her mother if she could help out because she enjoyed doing it and it got her out of the house. Half the time she played on the internet or talked to customers and basically goofed off. We never payed her but someone turned us into the labor board and it turned into a big deal. Long story short we were also told we had to stop letting our grandkids (4 and 10 at the time) do any kind of work too. They couldn’t even sweep or stand on the milk crate and help ring people up. This situation kind of help me understand why America is in the shape it is now. The young girl legally started working for us a few weeks ago. If the grandkids want to help I’ll pay the fine. It’s ridiculous

We had to be up, fully dressed ready to go to work every morning cept Sunday.
While at the breakfast table dad gave everyone a job.
When he started filling his thermos you better be heading for the door.
Now soon as we saw that Ford turn on the paved road we would quit. It better be done and done right before he got home. We all had good work ethic.

Maybe the reason lies within a survey reported on local CBS tv station news today.

62% of Millennials and 60% of generation Z polled say, the image you present of yourself online with photos and postings on social media sites is more important than how you present yourself in everyday life in the real world.
20% of baby boomers agree.

There was no lollygaggin at my house for us kids either. We either worked on the farm side or in my dad's auto shop.
As teenagers my 2 older sisters ran the valve grinding/valve seat machine and rebuilt carburetors while my brother and I beginning around age 12, did the r/r under hood and under car part of things. We ALL did farm stuff. My first 'car' and how I learned to drive was a 8n Ford and I was shocked a couple years later to realize that automobiles didn't have left & right rear brakes. (that's probably a good thing.)
