I have about 6 acres fenced in two sections and would like to plant something now to help with the cattle this fall. I only have 2 steers and 1 heifer. The steers will be butchered late fall or winter but would like plant something. I have been reading about oats but maybe you guys have some suggestions?

I suggest tall fescue. It is a cool season grass and grows best in the fall. And many of our university studies show that it holds its protein and nutrient valve well into winter.

Fescue is good. I would also check out "Persist Orchard grass" It may not winter as good as fescue but it will establish quicker. I plan on doing as mix of it this fall or around Sept 1.
You can add to that mix some Grazing cereal rye and some ryegrass, both will winter well but play out in late spring next year.
