I have a place that is about 140 acres that is coming out of CRP grass contract soon. It is about 20 minutes from my house so I hate to fence it and put cattle on it because of the high cost of fuel to check them and the big cost of fence ,catch pen ect.
It is good black soil but it stays wet. I am wodering about planting it in ryegrass and cutting that for hay or planting Fescue and cutting that for hay. I think if I planted the ryegrass I could rent it out for hunting and cut it for hay. Any suggestions?
With the price of fertilizer and ryegrass seed anyone got a ballpark figure of what it cost to plant ryegrass per acre?

Did a little checking today and it looks like with fertilizer and ryegrass it would be around 100 per acre to plant. Looks like planting ryegrass for hay is a loosing situation. I bet I would have 50 per roll in it before I even rolled it.

After reading another thread looks like I might have underestimated the yield. If you can get enough rolls per acre it could work.

If you already have Dallis grass just spray with herbicide. Biggest bang for the buck. You can always change to another grass latter.
