A mysterious polio-like syndrome has developed in at least 100 children across the country, who also came down with Enterovirus D-68.
One six-year-old girl being treated at Children's of Alabama has paralysis in both her arms. She is on a ventilator to help her breathe.
The paralysis has doctors across the country stumped. Neurologists are certain it isn't polio. but the symptoms are similar.
They've named it Acute Flaccid Myelitis.
Acute -- since it happens suddenly.
Flaccid -- because the limbs affected are weak.
Myelitis --which refers to inflammation of the nerve cells in the spinal cord.
