What is " Acute Flaccid Myelitis " ?

Pediatricians and child neurologists aren't quite sure what they are up against.

A mysterious polio-like syndrome has developed in at least 100 children across the country, who also came down with Enterovirus D-68.

One six-year-old girl being treated at Children's of Alabama has paralysis in both her arms. She is on a ventilator to help her breathe.

The paralysis has doctors across the country stumped. Neurologists are certain it isn't polio. but the symptoms are similar.

They've named it Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

Acute -- since it happens suddenly.
Flaccid -- because the limbs affected are weak.
Myelitis --which refers to inflammation of the nerve cells in the spinal cord.

In the cattle industry we call this PEM ( polioencephalomalacia ) most likly caused by ingesting excessive amounts of sulfur.

I know a guy with the sembles. You can look at this guy, and tell he has it. It's where your butt, and your face start to semble each other.

CDC cites 2 more deaths in EV-D68 cases, more polio-like illnesses
Today's update suggests a slight uptick in overall EV-D68 activity the week of Oct 26 to Nov 1, with cases described as low in 37 states, elevated in 7, and increasing in 3. A week earlier, EV-D68 circulation was listed as low in 39 states and elevated in 7, with 4 not reporting.
Polio-like cases reach 70
In the related investigation, the CDC reported that the number of recent unexplained neurologic illnesses involving limb weakness in children has reached 70, up by 6 since a week ago. The number of affected states is now 29, one more than last week.
The case definition used in the investigation involves acute onset of focal limb weakness since Aug 1 in persons under 21 years old, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of a lesion mainly in the gray matter of the spinal cord.
The CDC said it is still checking fewer than half a dozen additional reports of similar polio-like illnesses.

It seems acute flaccid myelitis is not new and has been around a lot longer then the CDC has lead us to believe.

In August 2012, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) was contacted by a San Francisco Bay area clinician who requested poliovirus testing for an unvaccinated man aged 29 years with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) associated with anterior myelitis (i.e., evidence of inflammation of the spinal cord involving the grey matter including anterior horn cell bodies) and no history of international travel during the month before symptom onset. Within 2 weeks, CDPH had received reports of two additional cases of AFP with anterior myelitis of unknown etiology. Testing at CDPH's Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory for stool, nasopharyngeal swab, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) did not detect the presence of an enterovirus (EV), the genus of the family Picornaviridae that includes poliovirus. Additional laboratory testing for infectious diseases conducted at the CDPH Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory did not identify a causative agent to explain the observed clinical syndrome reported among the patients. To identify other cases of AFP with anterior myelitis and elucidate possible common etiologies, CDPH posted alerts in official communications for California local health departments during December 2012, July 2013, and February 2014. Reports of cases of neurologic illness received by CDPH were investigated throughout this period, and clinicians were encouraged to submit clinical samples for testing. A total of 23 cases of AFP with anterior myelitis of unknown etiology were identified. Epidemiologic and laboratory investigation did not identify poliovirus infection as a possible cause for the observed cases. No common etiology was identified to explain the reported cases, although EV-D68 was identified in upper respiratory tract specimens of two patients. EV infection, including poliovirus infection, should be considered in the differential diagnosis in cases of AFP with anterior myelitis and testing performed per CDC guidelines (1).

CDC update:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working closely with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Children's Hospital Colorado to investigate a cluster of pediatric patients hospitalized with acute neurologic illness of undetermined etiology ( the cause or causes of a disease or abnormal condition )
characterized by focal limb weakness and abnormalities of the spinal cord gray matter on MRI.
On September 26, CDC issued a request to all states to look for and report other similar neurologic illnesses. We are receiving reports and will update this website with new available data every Thursday.
Update
As of November 6, CDC has verified reports of 70 cases in 29 states that meet our case definition below. We are working with healthcare professionals and state and local officials to investigate all of these cases.
We are also in the process of verifying less than half the number of cases will likely increase further as we update these numbers weekly on Thursday, but the increase will not necessarily reflect changes in occurrence oa dozen additional reports. These investigations take time. Therefore,f cases in real time.
Case Definition
Persons who meet the case definition should be reported to state and local health departments.
To be considered a case, a patient must meet ALL 4 of the following criteria:
1. Patient ≤21 years of age,
2. Acute onset of focal limb weakness,
3. On or after August 1, 2014, AND
4. An MRI showing a spinal cord lesion largely restricted to gray matter

Merck:

"PEM has been associated with altered thiamine status, but more recently an association with high sulfur intake has been observed."

(1 )"In general, younger animals are more frequently affected than adults."

( 4 )"A pattern observed in brains of cattle with early, severe, acute sulfur-related PEM features multifocal vascular necrosis, hemorrhage, and parenchymal necrosis in deep gray matter including the striatum, thalamus, and midbrain."

" In the advanced clinical form, different neurological signs dominate depending on the phase of the disease: lethargy, muscle contractions, hypersensitivity, ataxia ( 2 ) and lack of coordination, head pressing on walls, contractions of whole muscle parts (lockjaw, stiff neck), and central cortical blindness

Finally, the animals die with symptoms of complete blindness and paralysis that can be preceded or accompanied by disorders of the digestive and respiratory systems "

If your concerned about the children do something about the number 1 and 2 killers in America. Auto accidents and cancer. Your tinfoil hat is looking a little tattered.

Nope, not even if it was my own. Odds are less than one in a million... there's pages and pages of diseases far more likely.

M5.. I think Diabetes deserves an honorable mention.. one that has been on the rise in a big way in the last couple decades

Unexplained, polio-like illness has paralyzed 75 kids

An unexplained, polio-like illness has now affected 75 children across the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The first cases were reported in August in Colorado, around the same time that children began going to the emergency room with breathing problems related to enterovirus D68, according to the CDC. The CDC reports 1,116 cases of the enterovirus in 47 states and Washington, D.C. recent months, almost all in children. Twelve children with the virus have died.
