How accurate are the tapes that measure a calve's leg diameter to obtain an estimated weight? Are they consideded acceptable for epd weights? Where can I get one?

we use the weight tapes on our baby calves. at first we used a scale to check for accuracy which was usually plus or minus about 2 lbs. you can purchase them from valley vet supply. they have an on-line catalog.

I have used the calf tapes for several years and found them quite close to actual weight. I know of several purebred breeders that use them for their birthweight records.

Where they really come in handy is when you have a heifer having calving problems with just the hooves sticking out- tape them and get a good idea of the calfs size- helps to make the decision on hauling to the vet for a C-section or pulling.
