We purchased seven bred cows last fall and they calved in late February/early March. What is the best method for weaning these calves? Also, any comments on the timing of weaning would be helpful. Thanks.
if the calves were born feb & mar you would wean them at seven months sept - nov. you can wean earlier if it is necessary but 6-8 months is best so the cow has time to recouperate(90 days or so) before calving again.
I usually pull my calves off the cow at six months. I put them into a fenced lot and leave the cows in an adjoing field. Both the cows and calves will make some noise and stand at the fence with each other but after a couple of days the cows will go about their business and just make regular visits while after another couple of days the calves will settle down and seem to adjust to being away from momma.
