I was wondering at what age or weight do you prefer to wean your calves at. And when weaning them do you put the on pasture or grain for a while.

We wean at 4-6 months of age, our average weight is 450-500 lbs. Ours go in the barn on dry hay and a bit of grain for awhile, but it usually starts snowing at or before weaning, so that limits our options.

We generally wean in October which puts our calves at 6-8 months old. The steers usually go directly to the auction mart, and the cull heifers. The heifers we keep go into a dry lot where they will stay until green up in the spring. They get enough grain (oats or barley) to keep them gaining about 1.5 lbs/day.
