Wanting to buy some middle aged cows

I'm trying to help a couple who are wanting to get started with cattle.Here are their requirements (in no real order):

* Middle aged cows; must have raised at least one calf; cows 7-8 are at the old-end of the range. Bred heifers are not an option. Weaned heifers are not an option.
* Any color is fine; any breed or mix of breeds is fine; prefer cattle w/o any ear as they're too far north.
* Must EITHER be late bred to calve starting some time between mid-Feb and the end of March ... or ... must be opens out of a fall calving herd with a very narrow breeding window of 50 days or less.
* Must have had quite a bit of fescue exposure the last two years and must have maintained condition.
* Prefer cows that aren't fed in order to maintain condition -- the more pasture / hay (vs. grain / silage / etc.) the better. Pasture / hay only is best.
* Good temperaments, udders, teeth and feet.

Basically, I'm looking for a few respectable or better commercial cows.

I thought I'd throw it out here while I'm calling around to my local contacts to see if anyone near me might have anything worth taking a look at ... They'll buy a handful (2-10) at a time, or a bunch (20-40) at a time from any single seller. The closer you are to KC the better.

You don;t have to purge it. The oldest stuff just gets deleted as newer stuff comes in

A lot of K7 stuff will have been bought out of a stockyard. That's not a bad thing I am just telling you that so you know. If they don't mind buying some cows at the sale barn, there's a few of us that go to several sales not to far from you that could probably find some pretty reasonable. If you want to know that they are getting good cows it would probably be best to buy from someone you trust that have owned the cows for a while. It'll cost more but there may be less problems.

Cattle from stockyards can be reasonable to good to great cattle ... but they're not what they/we are looking for. Thanks for the suggestion.

The preference is to by cows from a cow/calf guy who's had the cows they'd be selling for at least a couple of years and who've spent large portions of those years on fescue-based pastures.

Apparently, according to local CL postings, it's $1250 - $2500 per bred cow for 2-80 head. Some of these have calves at their side. Some are 3N1s.

As with other stuff, the devil is in the details. Presumably, the goofy ones with no teeth and two good quarters are cheaper than the younger laid-back ones. But, not necessarily. Gotta also consider travel time to/from to go see these girls ...

I'm not looking to get the cheapest ones out there, but I'm looking for a good bang-for-the-buck group that fit the criteria I laid out above.

Depending on flesh, how good the bags are, and disposition, 3-7 year old heavy breds are costing between 1200 and 1650 at most of the sales I've been at in the south. Special sales they have been higher though. I've been seeing a lot of 3-5 year olds still bringing 2000-2500 out west yet.

You can create a folder, I've labeled mine Save. Then just move the PMs to that folder

Are you sure you don't check on CL often? Plenty of good cows for sale on CL.

A lot less dispersals here than in the recent past. I think folks that have good cows had valued them at > $2000, and are reluctant to haul into a sale barn with today' volatile prices. On a slow day - - you can pick off feedlot bred heifers and usable BM cows here for $950 to $1150 at the sales barn. I think this is still a bit high considering the kill market.

I have not been shopping on CL.

Just curious where "out west" is. I know in this area the further west you go the cheaper they get. I know of some very nice/fancy 4 y/0 black cows 5-6 months bred that brought $1,400 in SE CO 2 weeks ago. Heard of an old sale barn manager stopping a special sale and giving the buyers a scolding for not bidding. Didn't work many were no saled and took home.

I was talking Fort Pierre SD and a few sales in Montana I had seen. A couple weeks ago one man had ten pot loads of 3 and 4 year old cows at Fort Pierre. His cows with short tails and short ears brought 2025 and that was the least any of them brought. Bred sales have been more up and down around the country this year than I have seen since I've been going to sales regularly. At the same barn from one week to the next prices can change by 100's of dollars for the same kind of cattle.

I've been keeping my eyes open for essentially the same here. Very hard to come by. There was a total dispersal by a local vet. Generally younger cows, perfect set for me. All or nothing and I both didn't have the stroke or the ground for them.

Thanks to everyone who's reached out. If all goes well, we'll have a bunch of new girls in the pasture come dinnertime Thursday.

Talltimber ... we might have 8-12 pairs to sell once they calve out.
