I had a lady I worked with that told me she was thinking about not eating beef any more. She was also against deer hunting, two very specific things. Her and I got along really good. She was an African American, lady, who's preference was other ladies so it was a dicey deal but we had one thing in common at least.
One day we were talking and she was telling me why she was considering stopping to eat beef. She brought up treatment of the animals, hormones, etc. What was a little surprising is she lumped the industry in as a whole.
I heard the same thing from a friend of mine who lived in Europe and has now moved back to the US. Every thing was... The Anerican Beef Industry. The producer got blamed for every thing through the whole supply chain.
Neither of them had ever been on a property with cattle and seen where it all starts so I took them on a tour.
I didn't change their minds, nor did I try, about the treatment of the animals, or hormones or any thing, but I did draw a distinction between the types of operations and the supply chain. It was a big eye opener to say the least.
The deer hunting deal was funny too. I took that lady through what all goes in to our "deer hunting" and again drew a distinction between types of hunters.
Both had been fed a lot of false information but both were smart enough to question the validity and stay open to other information. No one had ever tried to explain the other side to them.
