You can't PROVE that most of them are illegal and there's a lot of questions that can't legally be asked so your best bet is to hire the best liars. As long as you don't see irrefutable evidence that they are illegal then they are your best option for cheap labor that WORKS.
I've said before and I'll repeat that my worst nightmare as a tree-fruit farmer is for the government to shut down the border and welfare at the same time. I don't want a bunch of lazy addicts who are forced into labor to show up to handle my crop. Nothing good could possibly come out of that for me.
The dairies that I'm on are mostly exclusive Mexican labor. A few are legal but nobody really knows who is and who isn't. What a blessing it's been for my customers to have a steady flow of farm kids that are eager to work, understand farm work, are reluctant to sue when they're hurt and willing to work hurt or sick.
On those same dairies I've seen a real push to hire any citizen that wants a job and I can honestly say that that has only worked one time. :frowns:
