Trailer capacity

Help Support CattleToday:

The axles can hold 7,000# but remember to subtract the weight of the trailer. Take it to a gravel of sand supplier they have scales and will weigh it for nothing. Just because that trailer can carry 'x' amount of weight, doesn't mean it will in every situation. Is it gooseneck, bumper pull, does it have brakes...?
I know I'm making it drawn out, but you have much $$$$ in that trailer if something goes wrong.
All in all I would say about 8 safely though.

7000# trailer capacity
- 2000# trailer weight
= 5000# load
= 8 - 500# calves

best to ya

If you pull with a 1 ton, you can add 2000 to your net, 3/4 ton 1500 etc.

My guess is with 3500 pound axles on a G/N, load range E (or even G) tires inflated to 75 pounds or better, pulling with atleast a 3/4 ton, you should be comfortable with a dozen head.

Make sure the fuses to your truck's brake controller are good and it is a good idea to pack a spare fuse in the glove box.

For me alot would depend on how far I was hauling them when I decided how tight to pack the trailer. More than eight calves in a trailer that size is going to be a tight squeeze....be sure to post the video of that rodeo. IMO six would be a good tight load. Our's is a old Big Tex 5' X 14" inside and I'd be comfortable with six, seven on a short trip. I don't worry with four 10 wt steers in it...just allow alot of stopping distance. The tariler holds more weight than steers IMO.
Just my two bits worth. DMc

No it's a POS Dodge. I come from a line of Ford drivers, actually but a few years ago got my first Chevy by accident and now am a convert of sorts.

Dodge: crapvehicles with expensive, hard to find parts

Ford: crapvehicles with a few exceptions (little escorts were EXCELLENT cars) parts are less than Dodge, but you gotta buy a special tool every dang time.

Chevy: crap vehicle, but parts are relatively cheap and always in stock.

Can you tell what I think of motor vehicles? I'm thinking real hard about that Kawasaki mule.

Have a big 15 passenger Ford van with a 460 in it - it can pull better than the pick-up (to be fair to the truck, its just a 1500, but its the second Dodge in the family and I swore after the last one no more, of course this was a deal too good and too timely to pass up so here we go again. And the seats really suck - why?)

How many 500 lb cattle(Aproximately) can you haul with a 6'6" X 14' trailer with 2ea 3500 lb axles?

With calves the issue will NOT be the weight. It will be the room for the animals.

In fact they will probably crowd out at somewhere in the 7-9 head mark.

Distance and footing is a factor as well. Specifically they need room to get up if they go down - otherwise they will be down for the entire trip.

Make sure that you have good footing for them - they will "loosen up" in the trailer and the floor becomes very slippery. We use old hay because it seems to do a better job than straw - but straw works fine in a pinch. Shavings do not cut it in my opinion.

Bez?

For the footing issue, we laid down one of those stock panels (wire mesh- sort of like a heavier gauge concrete wire) and used four fence steeples to nail down the corners. Works real good - easy to remove for cleaning and not expensive.

I don't know about y'all, but that many calves in a 14' trailer sounds like a lot to me. Especially in the heat, if you're going to haul them any distance. I would think 6 head would be plenty.

Perhaps, but I just did this last week in my own rig at 90 degrees - 7 total with no prob. Could have done more but I was concerned about downers.

Then again they could have weighed 450 each - did not scale them.

Bez?

Same size trailer we had 8 between 600 and 675. They were crammed in there thight, the way I like to load them, and we only went 75 miles but it was early in the morning.
