Trailer advice

I sold my 24' trailer with plans to get torsion axles and 6.8 wide
I've been shopping and I can get a 20' quite a bit cheaper
I'm told the added width on the 20' x 6.8 will haul nearly as many as the 24' x 6'
With the added with on the 20' will I miss the 4' ?

I think you will appreciate the extra width more than the lost length, particularly with cows and Bulls. And yes, based on square footage you will be pretty much hauling the same load, maybe less one calf.

I have a wide 20' trailer.. I like it, follows nicely and hauls anything I need it to, width doesn't bother me, and I can turn around in some pretty tight spots (single cab pickup helps that too)

I like my 24 bc of the two gates. With that being said rarely is it completely loaded. That 6'8 wide is nice. Mine is only 6'. I have a friend who has the torsion axles on a 24' and he tears up tires every other time he uses it. Says he wants spring axles. I think one is most likely bent. You know your needs and budget but I don't think you'll regret having the 24 x 6'8 for the width and the length.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, but for the price and ease of getting around I'm leaning towards the 20'

My first and only cattle trailer until this year was a 24x6.8 WW with torsion axles, never found a place I couldn't take that trailer. Then back in the summer I bought a new 32x6.8 delco, so far there hasn't been a place that I couldn't take it either, but that might change, I was planning on keeping my 24 for those places but sold it, I have plenty of friends with smaller trailers I can use if I need to.

What brands are you looking at? I never thought there was much of a price difference in a 20 and a 24ft. If it was me I would look at a delco, neckover and a WW, so far I've been very happy with my delco, and I've hauled a bunch of big loads a lot of miles.

In that case I can see why you would buy a 20, I've been looking at some 24s for a friend and they are all about 8800$ to 10,000$, if you can get a 20ft for 2/3 of that I would say it might be they way to go if you can get by with a trailer that small.

I wouldn't have thought the price would have been that much different. Wow. A 20x6'8 will probably serve you fine. Local stockyard just bought a Circle W. Had Stolls before that. Never owned either personally but they held up pretty good to be mistreated like they were. I had a '93 model Gooseneck 20'. They were built good back then. May still be?

Never owned either personally but they held up pretty good to be mistreated like they were. I had a '93 model Gooseneck 20'. They were built good back then. May still be?

Back in those years I think a gooseneck was about the best trailer going, now they are still a good trailer, but there's better trailers that actually cost less. In my opinion a circle W is one of them. I've looked st some stolls and wasn't impressed, but I can't say if they are good or bad.

I've heard and read this a few times, but why? I run a 20' WW and most of the time I don't use the cut gate. We run 10k pounds in and close the gates.

Distributing weight. Seperating pairs when moving. Grouping calves at farm before you get to the barn. Sometimes I even haul my 4 wheeler with the cows. Not necessary. But it's nice at times.

Sort on the trailer, if the facilities you are leaving from loaded is junk
Less cattle commotion on the road
One trip to multiple locations
Great if your also hauling a horse to catch or gather with.

I agree with these guys about the extra cut gate. I have a old 6x24 right now, I don't haul a lot but I'm getting ready to buy a new 6.8 or 7x24, wouldn't want anything smaller.

That's right, a 24 is nice to haul 8 or 9 pairs in, put the cows in the front 16 and the calves in the back.

6'8" = 6.67', so a 20'x6'8" would be 133.4 square feet, vs a 24'x6' which would be 144 square feet... Basically one big cow or a couple of calves difference. We have one of each right now - I'd much rather pull the 20, but it's a full top aluminum and the 24 is a steel bar top (w/ tarp), so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison. Neither one is any trouble to get around, both have their advantages in particular situations.

The 2nd cut gate is part of why I went with 24x6 this last time - partly for separating calves, partly because I often haul a few odds to the sale barn for different owners, and that extra cut makes life easier a lot of times. You might have to order it, but you can get 20' trailers with 2 cut gates - usually gives you 4' in the front, and two 8's behind that, if that matters to you.
