There is finally going to be some rain (or so they say) this weekend. We haven't really had any rain since August, everything is brown, I've never seen it so brown in October before. Anyway, the wheat and turnips I planted are just sitting there doin' nothing.

Is it too late to put some more wheat down even though at this point it won't be worth anything until spring? I was wanting some winter grazing but I will have to put out hay soon. What about a field I did not get to this fall, can I still plant any fescue there or is it too close to hard freeze?

Most times I have noticed people around here put out hay at Thanksgiving, I usually make it another month, but this has been a nightmare for any fall/winter grazing. This is my 3rd year of having cattle. Wondering if I will get any growth on existing fescue at this point.

Thanks

You can still plant winter rye, possibly barley, triticale, and most likely winter wheat. I'm still planting cover crops into the corn fields right now.. here in Maryland.

IMHO, wheat is your best bet. I have planted it as a cover crop, as late as mid November.

I just drilled some Cold-Grazer Rye with a JD 137-B Drill (like a Van-Brundt). Got 3/10" rain on it and it's up 4" already. I drilled it in on 10/27. SW Missouri. Supposedly...when days warm up and get above mid-30's, the stuff will grow some. I don't think cows like it quite as good as wheat, but if they don't have wheat in there too, they'll not know the difference!
