Today's Squirrel Hunt

[HOSS]

I put together a squirrel tournament for Jan 19th. A bunch of us are putting in a 20.00 entry fee. We hunt until 10:00am and the pay-out is 100%. Here are the rules:

.22LR rifles only (no shotguns)
Statewide limit of 10 squirrels applies
Headshots worth 10pts
Bodyshots worth 5pts

100 possible points.

The hunter with the most points wins the pot. If a tie it is split evenly.

Afterwards we clean the squirrels and tailgate right at the woods. It is going to be fun. Nobody squirrel hunts here anymore so we are infested with both red and greys. Should be a good time for all.

very cool gun. I have never eaten squirrel. I wouldn't know what to expect. We don't have many where I live (which is a prairie). Not many trees. There are quite a few when you go down towards the river bottom.

I've still got the first gun my dad bought for me to hunt squirrels with.
I was eight yr old when he bought me a 22 single shot bolt action springfield.
I used to go down in the holler from the house and set in the hickory grove and shoot squirrels.
I would use 22 shorts so they wouldn't be so noisey and the squirrels would just keep on coming in for the hickory nutts.
Dad would give me he## if I didn't make a head shot.

Here in this thicket with cat squirrel's you would have to have somebody pull a Radio Flyer full of 22 shells behind you.

Here it is decent open hardwoods with plenty of acorns and hickory nuts about. As a kid I used to kill alot of tree rats with an old Revelation single shot .410 shotgun. It is much more fun with a .22 rifle. It is a nice way to spend those crisp, late winter mornings when deer season is done.

We used to have contest for fun cousin's and uncle's.
You got 10 shells and were checked by the Judge for hidden ammo usually grandpa or a great uncle.
If there was a tie then those that tied got 9 shells for the next hunt.
Seen it get down to two or three shells before someone was declared winner.
Squirrel hunting here in East Texas was a big deal, much bigger than deer hunting back when I was a pup.

I used to get 3 shells for that old single 410. When they started giving me 5 shells I thought it was a coming of age thing.

When they sat you down to watch a tree, you didn't dare move unless you saw a tail. They sat me under a loan pecan on a creek once that was covered in vines. I got 5 and would have gotten more if I would have had shells. Squirrels were having to hit the ground to get away and you could hear them hit too.

when I was a teenager I would go horse camping and only take a knife, a saddle blanket, some matches and my 22.....
slept in the blanket and cooked squirrel on a stick over the fire....

We used to do that when we were young.
My dad would give me one week of a year during summer and the two neighbor boys and I would go out in the woods and live off the land.
We would take our rifles and hunting knifes and some salt and matches.
The meat would be plentiful and also the wild onions and lettuce for a salad.
Also done it a lot when I got older but I would add a can of coffee and a bottle to the pack.

I have the perfect solution for you. A Stevens with the 22 on top and 410 on the bottom. I never had one until recently but the old timers would use them so if the squirrel was sitting still the 22 cost less to shoot but still had the 410 if it was running.
I also have one in 22mag/20ga and one in 22 hornet/12ga. These are pretty good turkey guns.

I had an old uncle that had one with 30-30 over 20 gauge it was his favorite deer hunting gun.

That would be ideal for me. I have never saw one of those guns before.

Very nice I am looking now. Kenny when I was living in Floyd County thats all I used was .22 woods were different there than where I am now. I may have to get one of those. I like the .223 and 12 gauge combo for predators.

These are my ideal squirrel guns
Top is a Marlin .17 which i use for predators too
Middle is steven model 62 .22
bottom is my Henry lever action .22
