Anybody currently using a tire tank? Awhile back i got a brochure from our local nrcs office on watering systems. Titled "Watering systems for serious Graziers". In it they show the complete installation of a tire tank waterer. Seems like a good cheap way to water cattle.

Hills down lost a heifer to one of those I think. She got wedged up in it somehow.

The way mine works is it is a normal float system but mine has the float is an upright culvert maybe 12 ft from the tire trough. It can be at any distance as long as it is installed correctly. The float on mine is outside the fence so no way the cattle can touch it or mess it up. The tire trough is setting on gravel with fabric mat under it. A small amount of concrete is poured in the bottom center of the tire to seal everything up. The pipe from the float enters just barely into the bottom, like 1/2 inch. It doesnt matter if a cow got over into the trough there is nothing there to break or tear up but for whatever reason I have never seen one in it.
The tire itself is fron a large loader and one side of the tire is cut out. It holds 900 gal when full.

Have a dozen or so of 'em - and plan to put in at least 3-4 more.
Inexpensive, easy/quick to install. Virtually indestructible - though I have had a few that the cows have broken the float valve assembly off the riser on - some more than once.
