Withdrawal is 48 hours for CTC used as a feed additive or in mineral. So no, I don't declare it. Which makes one wonder why the VFD is necessary in the first place. ;):rolleyes::unsure:

What will that do to help prevent anaplasmosis or pinkeye? And do the cattle eat that instead of or in addition to mineral?

Keeps their rumen PH balanced and supposedly prevents pinkeye bacteria from getting a foothold. They say same with foot rot and some other bacteria related illnesses.

My highland neighbor was having lots of pinkeye trouble. The SB sure stopped it. Theyve not had an affected animal since leaving it out.

I dont know much about anaplasmosis.

Bought some steers and 1 bull calf yesterday. When I started to knife cut the bull calf there was 1 big tick on his sac.
I have been reading a lot this morning about ticks and what will kill or prevent them without effecting the dung beetle population. I have been using Ultra Saber but it seems that it is very hard on dung beetles. So is Permethrin. But also is any Ivermectin product.
I kept checking different products and Long Range is bad on dung beetles also.
For several years the only wormer I have used is injectable Cydectin so I checked it out.
It will take care or worms and ticks without bothering the dung beetles.
Just FYI from an old man with too much time to read and study.
I an also going to check on the tick vaccine and its effect but info seems a little harder to find.

I admire anyone that recognizes how heavy a footprint man can make on the world. I always loved finding dung beetles as a kid. What cool little critters.

I hadn't considered that the ultra saber I was using would effect them so much. Gotta get a new schedule now and only use it in the late fall I guess.

Brought a bull to a pasture about 2 weeks ago... he had been out with a guys' 5 cows; guy passed away, we went and got him...Looked at him good today when checking pinkeye problems... Son said he had GOBS of ticks between his hind legs around his 'nads, around his front legs... got him sprayed; real good on one side and around the hind legs... will go back tomorrow to work on the other side better and all around him... said it was like looking at a rough bark tree with them all over him... don't know if he had them when he got picked up... said most of the cows did not look like they had any... but will be looking better tomorrow...

Used to be ticks were terrible in E Texas, then fire ants moved in and the tick #s greatly decreased.
I hear possums eat a heck of a lot of ticks..

Do you know what type of ticks you are dealing with? We have the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus here in Northern Australia and along our tropical and subtropical east coast so cattle in these areas usually have a bit of Brahman content in them. It is not the actual tick that causes problems but the red blood cell destroying parasite that they carry namely Babesia bigemina, B. bovis and Anaplasma marginale. Cattle bred in these areas never have problems as they develop an immunity however cattle brought in from tick free areas need to be "blooded" ie vaccinated with a blood vaccine containing these 3 germs otherwise they become anaemic, febrile, jundiced and red urine with the 2 Babesia species.
We have a host of other ticks on native animals including Ixodes species which inject a paralysing toxin into animals but mostly with ticks it is the parasites they carry that are the problem.

My cows will consume between equal parts bicarbonate to mineral, to 1:2.
