The replacements

Please understand I am not faulting your cattle, like I said they work for you and that is what counts. Everyone has something they like or dislike about a cow or bull but that is what makes the world go round. If we all liked the exact same thing it would sure nuff be a dull world to live in.

Look at the black line when you draw a line sort of cutting off the legs see how much depth the first cow has over the second cow. I love that when I look at a cow some folks don't but when you do the line you can sure see it. When I look at bull sale catalogs I use the line trick a bunch it sure tells a tale as far as depth of body or guts which ever you want to call it.

edit, I actually put my line a little off on the top cow if it was in the same spot as the second she would show even deeper.

That top cow is a heckuva lot older than the bottom cow, not exactly an apples to apples comparison. I'd take either one (or preferably both!) of them, nice looking cows.

Our heifers go thru a gangly stage around the yearling mark, and the three above look like they're in that stage now. Big deal. BC is a far cry from the lower end of the lower 48, and I'm betting Nesikep has a grip on what works well in his area.

FWIW, Tizia would be my pick of the litter.

I did look and they are nice heifers, very long bodied. I love cattle with depth of body and your cattle lack that at least they do for me. However your cattle work in your environment so that makes them perfect for you. I can't imagine living in an area that has that little rainfall. Living on the coast in the summer we get pop up thunder showers almost daily. When the temp hits 90 you figure your going to get rain somewhere in the area. Good luck with the heifers.

Please note I was not trying to give Nesi a hard time, we were having a discussion that is my understanding of what we do on a forum. I never said his heifers were not good, so don't get your drawers in a wad! I also noted the extreme difference in location which plays a major difference in type and kind of cattle. Yes age does play a factor, but the second cow IMHO will never have the depth of body as the first cow. Does it really matter.....NO he likes both cows, he knows both cows and they work for him. He isn't raising cattle to please me he is raising cattle to please himself and that is exactly the way it should be. Ok rant over.

We're having exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping for :)

Frieghttrain, Here's Hector at 1 month old... there's a chance I may trade my Limo or homeraised bull for him at some point... I've seen a lot of his calves now and they look pretty uniform and nice from a really mixed herd of cows

No drawers in a wad here.

Pretty is as pretty does. I've had some gorgeous cows that didn't raise calves for ****, and some of the ugliest ones I own raise some dandies. The proof is in the pudding.

cfpinz.. Yep, I've had lots of beautiful failures as well... Rosie's 2nd to last calf was a very nice looking calf and yearling, and fell apart at the seams when she had to raise a calf.. and it was a miserable calf.. gave her 2 tries and got rid of her... Buddy who owns Hector actually bought her (I included the disclaimer on her performance) and it seems like she's got a nice heifer calf this year that's doing OK (sired by my homeraised bull)

Here's Roma, the nice failure

We've had less than stellar luck with masculine looking heifers like that. Real eye catchers out in the field but they wean off 4wt dinks. Those things happen.

I make more money off the steers but raising heifers is what keeps things interesting. They're the best indicator of the direction your cowherd is heading.

I didn't find she looked masculine.. either way she is no longer my problem.. Her 3 sisters earn their keep.

I would get bored raising stockers, and while there was good money while the price was on the rise, you can lose a lot of money in a hurry when they fall because you had to purchase them.. Cows on the other hand make you a calf every year, and in all honesty your cost of operation doesn't change a whole lot on a year-to-year basis, so even the years that the prices aren't great, it's still money coming in. We're too small to really ever make money here, though we don't want to lose our shirts either.. So I learn what I can, work toward my breeding goals, and the rest isn't in my power to control

It'll be a while yet before I get him.. maybe in the fall? or next spring? I'd have to get rid of at least one of my current bulls first, but I do like both of them... Honestly it might be another full year and a half... I haven't really gotten my money's worth out of the Limo, and next spring I'm going to have LOTS of (hopefully) nice linebred calves from my homeraised boy... His 2 full sisters, lots of cousins, aunts, and mother I decided to breed to him this year.. Herd is split about 50/50 between the two.. I wouldn't have split it that much in his favor if I hadn't liked the calves he's made already, they've got slender heads and aren't too heavy boned, and don't seem like they'll have huge frame scores... Builds are nice so far on each one, and once I have a couple good heifers I will see if the udders look like they'll be good.

Nice cattle . but shouldn't this be in the pets section. ;-) :D ..... 8)
We only have a section for "Other" pets though..

I think it's should be called the "Pests" section... I get mobbed

They look alright to me! I do see what gizmom is saying about the depth though. They could stand to be a little deeper bodied IMO. On the other hand they are still young and probably growing a lot right about now. Your cows always seem to wean really nice looking, big calves and I'm sure these will too! Your old Rosie cow was sure a nice looking animal.
