The American Dream

Help Support CattleToday:

It's just a story. This is America and anything is possible if you want it bad enough. I don't believe any of the "poor kids these days" stories. I saw an interview with Marcus Luttrell awhile back and he said something to this effect. "Immigrants think money grows on trees in America, well it does but you have to work really hard to pick it". He was talking about illegals coming across the border at his ranch in Texas but the saying is true for anyone. I feel very fortunate to have what I do, but nobody gave it to me through hand outs. Yesterday was a 15 hr day and today will be another. I spent my vacation last week working as hard as I do at the paying job. I've spent as much cash on the cattle in the last month as most people will make in a year, now I've got 7-8 months to make it back with the same cattle, it's how you get ahead in life.

It is fundamental economics. This article communicates the concept better than any other I have read. The author uses the scenario of the "lemonade stand" very cleverly. Worth reading and at least thinking about.

For over 50 years economist have suggested that until the rest of the world reaches our standard of living, they will be difficult if not impossible to complete with on an industrial basis. Simply stated, they can produce products at a much lower cost.

Is wealth finite?

Can the whole world live as America has lived? Must our standard of living fall for the world's to rise?

Are these our squandered blessings, or memories of things that have passed with time?
Unlimited Land
Unlimited Cheap Labor
Unlimited Innovation
Geographic Isolation

The article paints a bleak picture with enough excuses for all. Pick which one you like best.

The concept of "carrying capacity" in biological science states that in a closed system (a finite level of resources), biological organisms reach the capacity of the system and either die of disease or run out of resources. If you limit that question to the planet earth, the concept would dictate that resources are finite. The question is: will we reach carrying capacity before we develop the technology to obtain resources in other parts of the Universe.

No doubt our use of finite resources must change. Human creativity is the only infinite resource we have.

I have faith that we will end it all in a ball of fire or we will learn how to balance our needs with our resources.

I think we are a great distance away of being out of resources. Like a drug addict we may only seek recovery when we have hit rock bottom.

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

We should be able to last a long time if we use that Universal law wisely.

It's about to get rough boys... might wanna kick off the slippers and get your boots on.

Look at how Tyson an JBS make lemonade in the meat processing industry. America has become the place the world comes to to sell their products. Any good product is made cheaper and sometimes better than the original Manufacturer. Should we force someone to buy a product made in America just to keep someone making money when the person buying the product is spending their hard earned money on it. When a person is making more lemonade than they can sell do we demand the government buy it and dump it to keep that lemonade maker in business. Unfettered capitalism is a viscous cycle and blood thirsty. Through automation the American worker is more productive than any one in the world, but the world outside of America is automating also. Some of the automated machinery is made by foreign owned companies. What to do about it just hold on for dear life. Also good chance everyone will have life chances in the future in agricultural production and will have to adapt or die. Also where did the lemons come from if the person making the lemonade lived in New York or some place that did not grow lemons. Lemons were high when some of the makers were buying them and then the people raising lemons decide the lemons were bringing so much money that they needed to expand and produce more lemons. Unfettered capitalism will be as bad as any other type ism. Enough of my insane rambling going to bury a cousin today the fifth one this year. Really getting close to home. One last Saturday and the preacher talked about her walking on the streets of gold and not suffering I thought maybe sidewalks and not streets if they were riding would it be in automobiles, bicycles, motorcycles,
or maybe tractors and what make. Does the person every get horse singing the gospel hymns all day long. Also if you went to hell what does Satan use for his fires and will he ever run out of fuel. The last part has nothing to do with lemonade at all but just me wondering. How did the original writers of religious documents ever come up with the concept of heaven and hell. Could be they were like myself a little touched in the head.

Yes, could you?
I do pretty well at it now. Would hate give up the means of travel and the good roads I travel on. You do not have to look far to find areas we all fund for the benefit of all.

The American dream will pass away only when the people of this country lose their desire for freedom, and independence.

If only our forefathers would of realized there would come a day when men no longer desire freedom, or independence, but would bow down to things they fought against. They may have written the Constitution differently.

I suspect the architects of our nation had the foresight to see the futuristic effects technology and population would have on freedom and independence. Freedom and independence are starkly different in practice when you have a population of 1 person per 100 square miles versus a population of 100 persons per ONE square mile.

For example, at the current density of 100 persons per square mile, what one person does has a dramatic impact on the quality of life of the other 99 persons. Nothing demonstrates it more than NIMBY.

Roads and infrastructure aren't examples of Socialism Hurley. No wonder you're so mixed up.

Yes, but it is only a matter of semantics. Roads are publicly owned means of distribution. That does fit the definition of socialism.

Bull scat!

There are many aspects of American society that reflect socialism - a publicly owned institution for the better good of the whole.

Roads
Police and Fire Departments
Public sewer and water
Schools and Universities
Public Transportation
Libraries
Etc. There are many more.

You would also have to consider Social Security and Medicare as socialist. Even the US Armed Forces.

The eggs have already been broken.
