Taiwan to resume Canadian beef imports

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian said his country plans to resume importing of Canadian beef, after a near four-year ban on the product.
Shui-bian told a Canadian parliamentary delegation that Taiwan's health minister will travel to Canada to inspect its beef market and study export measures as steps toward re-opening the market to Canadian beef.
Taiwan, once the fifth-largest importer of Canadian beef, banned the product after Canada reported its first case of BSE in May 2003.
Promising prospects
Ted Haney, president of the Canadian Beef Export Federation, told meatingplace.com that the Taiwanese visit, scheduled to occur later this month, should be a formality, and trade could resume sometime this quarter.
He said Canadian exporters expect business to reach or surpass pre-BSE levels of 8,000 tons at a value of $42 million per year.
"We do believe Canada will re-establish trade with Taiwan in a very meaningful way," Haney said.
Although the goal is to export all edible beef from Canadian cattle of all ages, Haney said Taiwan probably will initially only accept bone-in beef from cattle younger than 30 months old and boneless beef from cattle older than 30 months.
