Just wanting some opinions on supplements some of you are using. We are currently feeding Crystlalyx bgf 30 tubs but have been told the brigade tubs are better for gestational beef cows within 60 days of calving. We are feeding corn silage and alfalfa/timothy bales free choice and will start calving end of March first of April. What are your opinions of the Crystalyx Brigade tubs. Thanks

The molasses based lick tubs and liguid feed is a convenient, albiet expensive, way to supplement. We have been limit feeding good quality alfalfa hay with fair quaility grass hay and only supplement when the grass hay is feed. We are feeding 20 percent breeder cubes (5 lbs per cow every other day). Our cows are in good shape and all the fall calvers have bred back.

I started feeding 2 of our pastures hay last Wed. We let them eat grass until they need hay. Started feeding 1 the first of Dec. because we were over stocked. They get only grass, hay, and minerals.

Down here that seems to work.

Considering the ration that you are feeding why do you feel the need to put out lick tubs? I feed a similar ration knowing I've supplied all of the protien and energy needs that they have. Of course a good mineral needs to be available.

For those of you who use the tubs or cubes: Do you have an idea of what it costs per head per day to feed them? Not trying to be smart, just looking for actual figures.

I have a group of 30 first-calvers and a few older cows penned off right now using a 35% lick tank and average hay, last two fill-ups have been 35 and 36 cents/pair/day, respectively. Roughly 2.8 lbs/pair/day but the calves are barely if at all touching it. They are actually consuming a little more hay than the middle-aged groups that are not supplemented but they look wonderful. The proof will come next fall as to whether it's worth it or not.

Last year none, but this year Poor quality hay and cold winter so far, ice and snow.

1/3 Soy Hulls, 1/3 Corn Gluten and 1/3 Corn.

2-5 pounds a day, sometimes every other day depending on weather.

That's the same mix we are using. It's around $175 ton and we have to haul it. Are ya'll getting a good price on it?
