Arkansas if you want to raise cattle then get you some cows. Try to find you a farm to lease get a few cows and have at it. Just throw that sample budget away, and do not over stock.

Think I will start off like someone suggested on here with finishing seeing how with only 20 acres there isnt alot you can do but finishing and make alittle money :)

If you want cows, get cows. It will be a hobby, and like all hobbies, it will cost you money. Look at it as a hobby and be thrilled if you make a nickel, especially on 20 acres. If I weren't fooling with cows, I would be hunting or fishing and both cost a fortune nowadays. A penny saved is a penny earned, right?

How much time do you have?

If I only had 20 acres and had to make money with cattle, I think I would get 10 nurse cows, with 10 crates in pens, and raise 80 calves. Each of the cow would nurse 2 groups of 4 per year. Twice a day on 12 hour intervals I would put the cow in the crate and let the calves in the pen nurse.

I would buy beef calf splits from the sale barn hopefully about 10 days old. $55 feed per calf would be fed to the cow.

Once the calves are weaned you'd be putting feed into the calf without the cow and I would cut that as much as possible. Sell them as 3's or 4's. There won't be any grazing for those weaned calves unless you lease additional ground.

I work at least 8 hous most the time and if someone doesnt come in I have to cover half there shift , I am just doing the cattle thing on the side for a Hobby for now until I can get more land and get where I can make a liveing off them once I can make a liveing I will probaly go Part-time Police officer so I dont lose my License and have to go to academy again. But my hopes and dreams are to one day own a Ranch with about 1,000 Acres and about 300 head of cattle maybe more :)

Anyone know what a good starter tractor would be for a small 20 Acre hobby I was leaning towards a Kubota with a front loader and a 5 foot mower and also comes with a Box Blade at for 16,000 this sounded like a good price to me what do you all think ? Or can someone recommend a good starter one and also wondering do people actually buy Hay and store it for there own livestock or do they just buy it as they need it ? :help:

if i was you id get a good clean used tractor.an save the money youd be spending on a new 1.as for the hay.you can buy good hay fairly cheap in the summer.haul it in an save it for winter feeding.its best to get the hay you need ahead of time.

Now THERE is some excellent beginner advice!!!!

Every now and then I drop by and I see a wreck in the distance. Usually I just read on and leave. But this guy wears a uniform - so I simply HAD to speak up.

Arkansas

You are a full time cop.

Unless you are independently wealthy you will never make enough money to get into and stay in the cattle biz with 20 acres and a few cows. Not if you plan to make money and be full time supported.

Anyone here tells you that you can make money as a newbie on a fresh start up – well, they are people with brown eyes.

Second off you are a full time cop (repeat I know) – to raise a whack of youngster calves and do it right you will need a partner – ie: wife. You will not do it on your own. Not if you want to maintain your sanity.

You try telling her she has to do chores because you need to work a double to make next months mortgage payment – might as well buy her a new house and give her the car and half your pension right away – if you do not the judge will – within 18 months.

Oh, and the judge will grant you some sort of visitation which you will not have time for since you are working a double shift every day to support your wife, her boyfriend and YOUR kids - make your mortgage payment - her mortgage payment - make your new car payment - because you gave the other car to her - and now the new boyfriend is driving it. Seen it all before.

I read your “smart study” budget. It is a load of crap that will have you selling the place at a loss in about 3 years. There is no money in small time cattle – it is a hobby. That means you might – just might – if you are lucky after all expenses – break even. But not likely.

At your knowledge level I would say you will be down to 75% by the end of the first year. Just because you see some dumb schitt farmer driving a broken down truck to town does not mean he is poor or stupid – he just saves his money for the time he knows he will be in the red.

You better have three years – yup three years operating capital sitting in the bank. Just because you love animals does not mean you can raise them. Investing everything to find out is a stupid way to find out.

You sound like a nice person who wants a change. Make the change but do not expect to do it on 20 acres and a few cows or calves. Make it a hobby that you are prepared to LOSE money on – fine.

You do this and plan to make money – please forgive me if I tell you RIGHT NOW – that when you go tits up I will give you a shout and say I told you so.

You might make it on goats or chickens – shorter turn around time and therefore more cash flow. You live and die on cash flow. Cows gives you year round expense and a tiny – one time inflow of cash. Usually less than you need. Before you buy and raise – know where you are going to sell them.

There is so much info on here but in the end just because everyone encourages you does not mean you need to do it. In fact that encouragement can and will make you go broke real fast.

You plan to work while all of this goes on you will see a side of life you are not used to. Try fencing / doctoring / feeding by headlight at 0200 so you can make your next shift or you can make that call to the neighbour so s/he can do it because you are on a double shift.

Those animals must eat and drink and it does not happen for nothing.

You buy equipment at your stage you are playing a fools game.

No return on investment. So – more outflow of cash. So put that tractor out of your mind and start thinking using that strong back and weak mind God provided for us all.

You can spend yourself into the poor house and onto the street – then someone like me will take it over from the banker. Happens regular like, so I am speaking truth.

My friend – buy the land – see if you can afford it. It is a decent investment at worst.

Then get it ready for animals - if you can afford it – then try to keep a job and do all required to hold the animals.

Better take a real close look at what you are thinking – otherwise someone is going to buy you out at pennies on the dollar when foreclosed upon.

Personally I think you need to see a shrink if you think you can afford to go full time – or for that matter do a 20 acre farmette in any part of the world and be self sufficient.

Remember what I said about folks with brown eyes – lots of encouragement – but that and 100 bucks will not fill up your pickup truck today.

Buy the land and rent it out to some other sucker who thinks he can make money on it. But you get the CASH for the rent at the START of each year.

You will clear more money (after expenses like the mortgage) - NOT! And work far less (true).

If you have time do some searches under the following words: start up, newbie, land, buying cattle, infrastructure, expenses, veterinarian, hay, tractor, equipment .... and probably a few more.

Use the following authors: Bez, Bez!, Bez?, Bez~ and Bez+ - may be a few more Bez derivatives - it has been a while since I was here - cannot remember all my old handles.

Do your homework bucko - you can be lead down the garden path by a bunch of well meaning folks who as nice as they are, have a habit of telling the story like they wish it was - rather than how it really is.

Best to ya',

Bez+

Bez is back
Better listen-forwarned is forarmed.
The naysayers usually have a point- I would read close with an open mind to make sure I didn't miss it.

Heres my naysaying-- On 20 acres you cannot make a profit with a stand alone commercial cow/calf operation. You need to be getting alot more creative.

Don't quit your day job. I am on 1500 acres that is paid for. I make money on cattle, but could not "make a living" on them unless either me or my wife had a good job. Luckily, we both do. (I suppose we could live, but not very well.) Wanna get a couple cows? Fine. Just don't expect to make money on them if you have to buy land. You won't. Hang around these boards and get some education, there is lots of good info here. Bez was right on the money with that post. You seem to have the ambition, good luck in your venture.

Yippee! Bez is back. Take his advice! He knows what he is talking about and I agree with him 100%.

Just to note, I filled up both tanks on the truck today @ $4.23 a gallon. $117.00 There is a 1/4 of a calf's worth gone right there. Diesel and fertilizer prices are going to make this a hard year for every cattle producer, let alone one new to the game.

Hey Aaron do have red underwear to go w/red truck, tractor, and cows :D :D

that was a good one alx. i blew my beverage all over the keyboard. why do some people insist on making things so difficult for beginners by providing them a recipe for disaster? that is something else that really irks me.

to the original poster, forget about the government grants and loans. i like to hunt and fish. can you tell me where to get a government grant to pay for it? my advice to you is to pay for your own hobby. make it easy on yourself and find 2 weaned holstein steers weighing 300 to 400 pounds. they should have these at the auctions in arkansas. be sure to get 2 of them. take them to a vet and let him do whatever he thinks they need and have him explain to you as he does it. holstein steers provide the best bang for the buck as far as buying your experience. they will be the cheapest thing per head and therefore will be less of a loss when you lose one. after you keep them on grass or hay along with a small amount of feed for 6 or 8 months you can fatten them up with more grain and have something you can put in the freezer or sell to a friend. or you can take them back where you got them and resell them. by that time you will have learned a lot about cattle with a very low investment. not only will you have learned a lot about cattle but most importantly you will have learned a lot about yourself. such as whether or not you are actually ready to be in the cattle business. then you can decide if you want something more complicated like cows.

first things first though. before you buy any cattle be sure to have your fences in shape, be sure you have a reliable water source and be sure you have a pen that will hold them. and most of all, be sure you have a good mentor.

Feed prices are high, land is high, fuel is high and cattle prices are not going up. Twenty acres will run about 2 head of cows. You will get $500 to $700 each for your calves. Good Luck. Might try goats!
Why do you have to put down people who are just trying to live their dream? You are in the cattle business, right? Not trying to stir up touble but people have dreams and 20 acres is a good start. Not everyone can go out and buy 200 acres cash. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way.
my 2 cents

Good advice is not telling people "Nope your dream isn't going to work out ...try goats isntead..hmmm. Not everyone is out to make a million bucks the first year. Some people want to do it as a HOBBY-not for a living.

That guy is a "needful thing". He types with no real connection or knowledge, he just needs to spew his always generic thoughts throughout the forum. Likely a loser in life but a hero ( Guru ) in here.

Buying grass calves is an age old solution to enjoying land ownership, raising your own beef and learning about husbandry at minimal risk. What consistently happens is you buy 2 cheap, sell 1, free beef for you, the land takes care of itself, taxes aside.
KISS
