Star Lake Dispersal

Help Support CattleToday:

Just looked at the massive catalog. Are those show cattle or working cattle. What say yee hereford pros about thier program. Also, what type money do those level of recipient cows generally bring?

I was told they are expecting cows to go pretty reasonable , but bulls to sell well. Never can tell how a sales gonna turn out.

Reasonable is only what someone thinks is a good deal to THEM. Its going to be a huge sale, but dont think I will be making it, even though its close to me.

Now I know I am a small time guy in jersey but why would anyone that raises herefords not go to that sale. I would like to go just to see the quality of the stock since I raise reg herefords. If it was less than a days drive I would definitely be going. So whats everyones thoughts on a producer with that much money tied up in big time stock having a dispersal and not trying to sell it as a whole so someone else can advance the herd.

My thoughts on it are: $$$$$$ thats why they do it like that.

and ive seen alot of dispersals,, where they didnt completely disperse... sorta like having a,, going out 'for' business sale

ALA... thats what I'm wonderin if they are doing that... then maybe start over with a different breed.

if they are smart they will retain some cattle or start buying cattle a week or 2 after the sale.

Since they're selling equipment and all, this appears to be about as close to truly being a COMPLETE DISPERSION sale as you'll see. People have a right to change their mind, but this appears to be a decision by the owners to concentrate on other things.

No doubt, the folks that have built that herd for so long - Montie, Max, Brad, Todd, and Josh - will probably all go on and continue working somewhere within the industry. People of that caliber are hard to find.

That's what I think, too.

So I have always wanted to go to big sale. I looked into flight, hotel, and rental car for three days. It would cost me 650 bucks. Would it be worth the trip or just watch online. I am interested in some embryos also. Just curious since im sure some of you guys that live out there have been to a few like this.

This is a huge catalog. I have posted the May sale results. Their are some huge numbers in some of those lots. With so many lots for sale it will be intereting to see how it goes. I wonder about bred heifer prices or even the price of some of the 4-6 year old non donor cows?

Bull 2 $39,550
Embryos 70 $574

You are using your head in the correct manner! I know from experience that you are aching to go to a sale like this (particularly one with as many high quality cattle on display), if for no other reason than to learn many of the little nuances that an operation like this uses in their operation! I have done that in the past many times. I even took my Beef Cattle agriculture class (26 men) to the "Penny and James Angus Dispersion" sale 60 some years ago. Not only did they (the class) see cattle the likes of which they had never seen in their lives before, but some of them had never heard an Auctioneer cry a Registered Sale before. The little nuances that were evident at that sale were so thick you could have cut them with a knife! They mixed in with the buyers at the sale and asked them questions about the cattle, and bidding tricks, and how to avoid giving away your interests in certain animals - it was absolutely invaluable for many of them. Four of the men were just starting out in the Registered Angus business, and they purchased a few of the less expensive females in the sale. Of course, they were all from Missouri (which is where Penny and James were located), so the travel expenses were insignificant. But the knowledge gained from attending that sale was invaluable to everyone in the class. Of course, I used that experience for discussions periods in later class periods - such as judging points, analyzing individual animals' Phenotype and pedigrees, etc. They did not even have EPD's at that time, so "hands-on" judging was part of the requirements of their attending the sale.

To see that quality of cattle all in one location, and then come back home and look at the lesser quality of your own cattle will teach you more in one or two days than you can learn in a month of classes and looking at pictures. Watching the proceeding on line is invaluable also, but nothing beats seeing them "live", so to speak. Listening to the "Bull Pucky Banter" that sale managers and auctioneers will stuff down your throat is another valuable learning experience which has to be experienced to be appreciated. One lesson you can take away from a sale like this is - don't believe everything that you hear!

I urge everyone who is interested in Hereford Cattle to get the catalog and go through it very carefully, and then watch how the individuals themselves sell, and WHY they did or did not bring what you expected! Use the expense of attending the sale as a "Cost of Doing Business" expense. You might even buy a "3-in-1" lot, if there is one (a cow with a calf and bred back), and take the expense of the trip off of your Income Tax. GO - and talk to breeders about their operations, and how they manage their protocols. You will never forget the experience!

Midtencattle I was interested in a donor cow that went as lot 64. STAR SJS ON DOMARK 508U ET bred to lock and load. she was a four year old. The description is her maternal sire but may be the same cow. I thought she would have gone for more than 3,700. There is some embryos from her in the sale I was interested in. Dont ask me why I like her cause I couldnt tell you due to my lack of experience in judging or showing. She just has a look I like. What do I not see that made her go for so little.

So DOCHARRIS should I have booked the flight already. What you say doesn't make it easy not to go. I would definitely go if the wife could go but she has work and some certification classes she cant miss. I still want to for all the reasons you say. I think I could learn a ton by going to a big sale like that. I go to sales around PA and Maryland but they only have around 40 head and arent the caliber of star lake. I really want to get my stock to a different level and feel I need to go to see other operations and cattle in that part of the country to really know what good cattle look like. I would love to buy some cattle but the shipping 1300 miles would be a ton and I dont feel like driving 23 hours each way. I feel the embryos would be the easiest route but not the best.

Also the flights get in to tulsa at 10am so I would miss the beginning of the sale if i didnt go thursday. The return flights leave the latest at 4 so I would miss the end if I wanted to leave saturday. I mean you cant miss the first or last lot of the sale right? That would be crazy or am I just crazy.

I think that you are looking at the "small details" rather than the overall "Benefits" of going to the sale, and purchasing something that will "Benefit" your herd and your future BU$INE$$ INCOME! So you have to drive a few hours. Sleep in the truck, Live on sandwiches, potato chips, Trail Mix, Beef Jerky, Apples and Oranges, and whatever they serve at the sale for snacking, and lots of water! Three years from now you will say "Hey! It was worth it!". If I lived closer to you, I would come and help you drive, and it wouldn't cost you any more than a few sandwiches and some oranges!
